In a lot of ways the entire Republican establishment since the 70s has been dedicated to making sure that what happened to Nixon would never be allowed to happen to one of theirs again

I can understand not voting but I can’t really wrap my head around actively recruiting other people not to vote, as if “non-voter” is some kind of social identity group you feel proud of

The constant spammy fundraising texts that are like “WE NEED TO KNOW DO YOU STILL SUPPORT JOE BIDEN” are not the worst thing about this very uncertain time in US politics but they’re up there.

The most convincing spin answer I've heard for this is "being president and campaigning are both full-time jobs and I only want to do one of them, finish out my term, and hand off to the next generation" or some such

Yeah I’m not sure how I would write that headline but the newsworthiness is obviously that she said it about Biden; the mention of “both candidates” reads more like a CYA equivocation

Yeah, and there's been a lot of bad faith right-wing attacks with out-of-context clips, cheapfakes, etc.

The NYT Games section rolled out a new game this week called Strands. Not quite as catchy as Connections but it’s pretty good, modeled like those word searches you’d have as busywork in school, except with added mechanics like fun.

The optimistic case is that her low approval is from being hitched to an unpopular POTUS, and running her instead of Joe would instantly dismantle the whole “he’s too old and feeble!” battle plan that MAGA has been gearing up for months.

You could see a world where Biden does a graceful handoff at the convention, talking about being a transitional president and wanting to assure we keep a lawless president out of office, and Harris is the best person to do that--and it turns out more-or-less okay. But that's assuming a lot.

But I don't see how he could even plausibly argue that any of that constituted "official acts." IIRC he already tried that about his public statements and it got rejected, and the idea that signing a personal check is an official act is even more ludicrous.

"Trump v. United States" is a pretty apt description of this whole period of American history tbh

You get like 2/3 through the headline and think "well that's horrible" and then the last two words somehow make it way worse

Please note I’m not talking about “wouldn’t it be funny if” hypotheticals, to make a point. I just mean the people who seem genuinely annoyed that he’s not announcing a crime spree as a super clever gambit that would definitely not backfire in any way.

I keep seeing people lament how he’s not using these great new powers SCOTUS has granted him, and I get it. It would be emotionally satisfying and also very funny! But it would also definitionally mean he’s doing crimes! I do not want any president to do crimes.

I get the wish Biden that would pull some kind of one weird trick ju jitsu but the whole point is that this decision enables crimes, so doing a clever reversal would involve *him* doing crimes, which would somewhat undermine the point that we have to elect him so the other guy can’t do crimes.

I think there’s some nitpicky rules about how much he can use the trappings of the presidency for campaigning, and for some reason we still have to follow the rules even if they don’t. But signaling that they’re going to make it a campaign issue is good at least

Yes, definitely more haunting than rousing. A great monologue and great performance though.

I prefer this one when it comes to anti-fasc inspiration. But wild that one show gave us two separate incredible monologues.

Solution: any Senator leaning towards voting for conviction gets a visit from SEAL Team 6.
What's that? The case would go before the Supreme Court? The Justices get a visit too.
All legal!

Honestly you don't even have to assassinate that many Senators, just one or two and the rest fall in line. And now it's all nice and legal.

I wouldn't interpret this so much as Heritage having much of a legitimate preference about the D candidate, more that they're just going to do maximum legal shenanigans no matter what happens and this is one easy way to do that

Right now I feel like the finger pointing will primarily be between the “replace Biden” and “don’t replace Biden” factions regardless of whether he gets replaced. Either way, if Trump wins, the other way was obviously better you absolute morons

I also notice Newsom more than most makes a point to be a loyal soldier in public. He was the first one out of the gate saying “so what if he had a bad debate, he’s got my full support.” Even if behind the scenes he’d love to be called up, he’s very careful to cultivate a team player image.
