Like Taylor's comparison to JKR falls flat for me because she is actively using her wealth and influence from her art to continue to cause harm. But I do think his point about no matter what you decide, being unable to see the work in the same way after the fact is important to think about

I do think we need to hold the artist's relationship to the art we love more loosely than we often do, and that parasocial grief and horror, while real and valid shouldn't supercede the feelings of vicitims, but also I think wrestling with your relationship to a bad actor's art is a nuanced thing

I don't know if I agree with all of this, and I think the conversation around Alice Munro specifically is different because she is dead compared to a living artist but I did appreciate the perspective this essay gave (Although content warning for non graphic discussions of the SA of children)

fwiw as a consumer, I'm more likely to buy a comic or sticker sheet at a Con because of budget and suitcase reasons (I've probably spent lots of money to be there myself) and another kind of merch item online while I'm at home because the costs of production means it can't be bought cheaply

besides the obvious alt right dogwhistles, I had so many friends with Epipens and they were SO EXPENSIVE being peanut free was like imperative not to put your friend's family in financial distress. and the only kids who sat quietly at my age were the neurodivergent ones who didn't exist apparently

At work some farmworkers we have been supporting gave us a gift of a ridiculous amount of asparagus as thanks for the help and we spent two days distributing it to food programs and I was really bolstered by the way a series of small acts of community care ended up feeding so many people

When the american liberals use France's election as an illustration of the need to VOTE, they ignore that people were not only voting against the far right but *for* something. They voted for a campaign which promises to: increase minimum wage, lower retirement age, pay for all childcare, etc

My student didn't show up for her lesson today and as I got home the thing I was most upset about was that I put on makeup in this heat so I could look like "a respectable teacher" and it was all for naught!

When I was a teenager, I organized a protest with a couple of friends after Michael Griffith was killed in Howard Beach. Almost no one showed up. I think we had 6 people [including us 3 organizers]. I was crushed. I cried to my dad & he asked: "what did you say to the three people who joined you?"

with love, please find at least one way to become active in your communities in addition to electoral politics. there is so much to be done, big things and little things, online and offline. elections are a tourniquet, not a fix, and we need creative interventions now more than ever.

you can call it a failure of imagination, or of hope. in many ways, they're the same thing. but you cannot call it rational, and you should not give it food.

let me put this another way: despair, or its new name, doomerism, asserts omniscience--that things cannot be better, that all possibilities of good are already foreclosed, that you can know this as fact. it looks like humility, but it's all ego. it is, in fact, the assumption of godhood.

Anyhow the best time to address the shit was yesterday, the 2nd best time is today. Demand everyone asking for your vote to support packing the court, stop giving your resources to the police, demand public housing, healthcare, childcare, education, transit, food support and a right to privacy.

Link up with and support the people organizing and providing these things in your community now. Support migrants in your community, people without housing in your community, demand and create public spaces, support your library, etc. don’t accept the bare minimum it’s not working.

Is the community at the church not nearly as left as it should be for a group that reveres the teachings of Christ? Yes. Did talking to hungry people with full time jobs who couldn't get off work while the food bank was open fill me with motivation to change? Also yes.

Another thing about this is that being involved in movements changes people, even if they are imperfect movements. I read the communist manifesto when I was 18 and laughed at how much of a drama queen Marx was. But it was working at a church that did food programs that radicalized me in my late 20s

It's also imo extremely good for the soul to do small, meaningful acts of radical care that do short term good. You can't personal responsibility your way out of a structural issue but you can personal responsibility your way into finding the good in the world

calling your reps and circulating petitions and going to protests is a necessary part of the work but it often feels like shouting at a wall and that is draining. but restocking your local community pantry feeds a hungry kid and that refills you so you can keep working to make pantries unnecessary

The best way I've found to help stave off the despair of the world we live in is to find ways to get involved in local organizing. There is a food bank or a native plant gardeners group or an English conversation group at your library that would love your support and you'll meet people who care too

if you feel bad about this, think: this second, hundreds of people who are retired or rich or both and have TONS of time on their hands are being REALLY FUCKING ANNOYING in an effort to push policies that deprive the rest of us of our rights. we MUST out-annoying them, by any means!

So my bank refused to fix the error they made which made it possible for a bunch of shit I'd been holding off to charge all at once. They refuse to even acknowledge it was an error. I now have a negative balance of -$1006.

I'd like some help paying it back, but slowly. 🧵
