I read Foucault's Pendulum a few years back & had the best time. I'd previously read Baudolino far too young to understand most of it but do remember finding it very dark-but-funny when I did get it. His semiotics work is also very interesting & genuinely pretty engaging given it's complex stuff.

Yeah, Banks definitely came to mind - I've only read Consider Phlebas & Player of Games from the Culture series but have Use of Weapons to read. Stross' Singularity Sky has a similar tone, albeit a bit lighter.

Instructing troops to shoot protestors requires strong military loyalty. Would not be surprised, given my impression that US army hierarchy & personnel are on average much less sympathetic to MAGA than US police, if this weren't a speed run method of getting couped.

I am definitely familiar with Cannabis Corpse - I briefly met Landphil at a Municipal Waste gig back in 2008 or so when my uni housemates managed to interview him for their metal radioshow, & he gave them Cannabis Corpse's first album for free to play on air.

A fairly balanced article on the 'long tail' of eugenics in Australia. Surprisingly, quotes me extensively. Let's hope it generates more historical analysis of the recursions of eugenics postWW2. Although patterns vary, the recurrent appeal needs critical study - surely a long tale!
