Johnson for his many failings was good at showing up on TV and saying reassuring things about staying home during covid. Only then Partygate was uncovered, and very quickly the opinion of Johnson shifted to "he doesn't give a fuck about me"

I think it's also the case that once people are jolted out of their preconceptions they can't easily be jolted back in. The first year of the Johnson government had at least the illusion of competence that the next 3-4 years pissed away.
