I know I sound paranoid, but I am utterly convinced one of the main factors here is to push Black girls out of competitive sports.

This this this. The entire "fairness in women's sports" machine is for ensuring that only a certain kind of white woman can compete and thus win athletic competitions.

Devastating but I appreciate the Lions getting closer to a comeback at the end!! Maybe next time. Hopefully in less than 40 years.

Miscarriage is hard enough emotionally... That women in Texas and elsewhere now have to endure this level of physical trauma with even less options than before, it's maddening.

I've had the Newsweek first person story about miscarrying in Texas bookmarked all week, just read it now. I got chills multiple times.

The top executive of the world governing body for running says that intersex women aren't women. This echoes what I heard a former running exec say on a meeting a couple years ago.
You don't see these kinds of obsessive limitations placed on men. It's ridiculous.

The Oscars are weird and I've only seen a handful of new movies... But it's a great thing to see BIPOC actors like Lily Gladstone and America Ferrera get recognition! I wish that was being celebrated more.

The meeting with Peterson was especially great. He's already a sponsor of half the bills I wanted to bring up, and for the other half, he either had just minutes before co-sponsored them or had plans to.

I got to meet with staff from Senator Liias' office yesterday, plus a 1:1 meeting with Rep. Strom Peterson, about criminal justice reform And today I read about how Rep. Lillian Ortiz-Self is fighting for accountability from privately owned immigration prisons.

I think eventually the discrimination in running rubbed up against the editorial choices of the NYT, but based on my research running started going after athletes in Africa before the NYT became obsessed with weird anti trans opinion pieces. But now it's all one big soup for sure!

Yep. I sat in on a meeting with a former running exec a couple of years ago and that's basically what he said. It was so gross.

In my first comment I went to transphobia bc that's what the OP was commenting on. But with this in general, I do think the fact that the athletes are Black and from Africa is a much a factor of them not fitting in the ideal gender box as the intersex piece.

The world governing bodies for running have been attacking athletes who don't fit into a specific "women" box for over a decade. It provided a template for the transphobic policies that we now see in other sports.

Yes this. Running has been a canary in the coal mine for discrimination against trans and BIPOC athletes.

Unfortunately the world governing body for running has been transphobic for a while. I wouldn't say the NYT led this to happen -- World Athletics has been quite content to go at this on their own for years. They're awful.

4 people have died at the local county jail here since last fall. Gonna keep this in my heart and head as I go to Olympia this morning to meet with my state reps about criminal justice reform.

I'm curious if LA has digital only news sites that are filling the gap. The Seattle area has a bunch.
Still sucks about the layoffs, though.

I've relied on it heavily in the past. I'm a SFF fan who's often out of the loop on new releases. The Hugo and Nebula awards have been especially helpful.

This is wild and a terrible way to handle a license transfer. 😬 I truly hope this is an iceberg and that everyone at SI is in the know about what's happening and already has a new offer from this new company all set up, and I just haven't read about their meticulous planning yet...

So bizarre that this isn't considered a national crisis, especially by politicians on the left. We're sleepwalking into an environment where like 80% of available information is right-wing propaganda and the rest is behind a paywall.

I wish we had more long term shelter space. So much of the infrastructure in the Seattle area is for short term, cold weather shelters, like the one I volunteer for.
