look i'll be clear, I will be voting, and encouraging everyone I know to do the same, against donald trump and the end of democracy in this country in november. I do not care if that means i'm voting for a man who is literally dead.

What this really boils down to is “I really like some of these up-and-comers in purple states because they aren’t dyed-in-the-wool democratic socialists and want to use this as an opportunity to ensure they are the party’s future and not ‘the Squad’ who scare me”

It's as if people completely forgot about the "Uncle Joe" memes from the transition from Obama to Trump. He's really that guy! Lean into it!

Genuinely do not understand a) the impulse to do this at all and b) how this person could possibly have this much time on their hands

Ok but also if you go to jail you don’t get to collect $200. What if you’re practicing civil disobedience?

You can be anti the Poe storyline or even the Finn storyline and I don’t care but the only thing that mattered is the Rey storyline - it comes down to “this person is against the problem”

His bad instincts undermine his best ones! It sucks! It’s. It’s not different from any other great filmmaker of his generation but we are simply unable
To talk about his work like regular people

Personally very pro TLJ, in particular the idea that it simply does not matter who Rey is. That idea is revolutionary

Yes! This is the part that I *hate*. These are the first movies I remember watching and I longed for “a galaxy far far away”. And still do!

Sure. I maintain that you simply cannot condemn Lucas as a visual stylist in basically anything - his goal with every movie was “how do we take advantage of this tech to make the best spectacle we can” which obviously more honorable than the modern bullshit is mainly my point

The things that suck that are contiguous about modern Star Wars are that the writing is mostly bad, as it was with Lucas. But Lucas would never dream of fucking around with the visuals, ever.

And to be clear, I am grateful for that! I was the beneficiary of a sizable-ish award in a class-action lawsuit because managers pressured people at the company I worked at not to take ten minute breaks to get done with closing faster. But I absolutely could never have done that by myself

To say nothing of “can I even afford a lawyer to take this case to civil court at the lowest possible levels”. Most of the things that have happened to me that I have had grounds to sue over (unfair labor practices in retail) have only been redressed because peoples’ wealthy parents bankrolled it

This was my favorite movie when I was a teenager, and yes, parts of it have aged poorly. But what remains resonant is that these are 5 people who, for specific individual reasons, are extremely closed off, and the cathartic scene represents all of them finally letting other people in

The thing about the podcast is that you can appreciate the episodes even if you've not watched the movie in question - often (maybe even most of the time?) the episode uses the movie as a jumping off point to talk about a specific 90s political thing far more than talking about the actual plot

Especially because a robust argument can be made that “laws with a Christian worldview” could be based around things like
“The first shall be last and the last shall be first”
“Neither do I condemn you”
“Heal the sick and cleanse the lepers”

I totally understand why people are actively not willing to identify who the fuck they are talking about and yet I also do not want to spend time digging into who the fuck they are talking about.
The dilemma!

I mean my parents are Presbyterian ministers. My dad voted R until 2020, when he sharply turned toward Biden and preached a lot of sermons creating a permission structure for his church to vote D (in Florida no less). I don't agree with them on everything but I am proud of them for that
