She was thrown in jail for allegedly testing positive for drugs at 2 mos in pregnancy to 'protect her fetus'
She was denied pre-natal care, she was denied her medication, she was denied pre-natal meds. She slept on a concrete floor...
and gave birth alone in a shower as guards mocked her agony.
Alabama is one state I will probably never set foot in again. And I'm quite glad of the fact. But it's very, very upsetting that some people seem to want to make this national policy...
We need both prison reform AND drug policy reform. It's not nice to say, but IMO it's past time to go ahead and treat drug addiction the way we treated cigarettes, ie, "filthy disgusting habit." What we are doing now, out of sympathy, isn't working.
There are many pregnant prisoner horror stories that predate the siege on reproductive rights.
It's just an added horror that the REASON for her imprisonment was to protect the fetus.
Meanwhile all those of the state who endangered HER life, and the INFANT who was born, will face what?
Nothing.
it never was about protecting children. its always about hateing women, makeing them dependent, degrate them, to have control over their bodies and their lifes.
I'm wondering how many people assume she's a drug addict for having amphetamines in her system when there are OTC or prescribed meds that can make you test positive for amphetamines. I take Adderall and Trazodone and both of those would cause me to fail. www.goodrx.com/health-topic...
So ... they threw her in jail to "protect" the life they so claim to value... but didn't provide any prenatal care to help that life develop and thrive.
She is unfortunately far from the only person to receive such treatment. Our carceral system is terrible to everyone, but ESPECIALLY to pregnant people.
Stop — and I cannot emphasize this enough — treating females as nothing more than incubators with legs.
She’s a whole, conscious human with rights to happiness just like any man, and she has a right to be free from spurious, perverse abuses like this “pro-life” trash.
