It's not every day that you receive a hot slab of unlabeled mental illness in your mailbox. This is a doozy: the margins, the glossy magazine paper, the hand delivery, the content. The only thing better than evidence is a preponderance of cultural references. I might frame it for the privy.

Round 2 of battles without honor and humanity vs. strong elderly go players. First game even, then took five stones against stronger folks. Won three games, lost one. Everyone is very kind and plays teaching-style go that models strong fundamentals. Learning a lot.

Swing by the grocer on the way home, high school kid behind the till is moving rather large stacks of counted cash to a bag to close up. If this were the US someone would have stuck him up ages ago, or worse. I hope this aspect of Japan never changes.

I look to read Neruda. Find Guardian-hosted translation of "Tonight I Can Write". Good, I think, but no, the ads are not done loading. Carefully tuned lines suddenly bend around a block that says "Guardian Newsroom: Inside Putin's Russia." This is wrong but not wholly uncalled for

The Edo period social problem of 鞘当て, in which two samurai whose scabbards have collided in passing proceed to fight, seems to be alive and well in the modern era. On rainy days like this it is not unusual to see 傘当て, and occasionally the subsequent (albeit verbal) tussle.

Unfortunately I have fallen in love with the girl in Sichuan who summons her water buffalo. I have also fallen in love with the water buffalo. If the two of them did that dance every day I would watch it every day. I wish I was friends with a water buffalo.
