UK politics can be grim, but election night there with constituencies being largely ungerrymandered, losers standing next to winners of podiums, and the "election season is 6 weeks, not 2 years" default is incredibly wholesome

It really is a weird symmetry that this year the UK elections are the 4th of July and the US elections are the 5th of November.

Though it take 250 years and more, we endure, and we fight for equality and real freedom. That's the lesson of the Revolutionary War.

And in from 1775-83 it felt like the people and the powerful, for once, were (mostly) on the same page. It didn't stay that way, but it was a glimpse of what might be possible. Oppressive, conservative, moneyed interests have always held great power here. But our side? In the end, we always win.

There were people who poured out of their meeting houses and marched off to war in April of 1775, to fight at Bunker Hill. People of color fought in the Continental Line, sometimes enslaved people seeking freedom, sometimes free. There were regular people whose houses were burned, who endured.

I think it's easy to be cynical about today. We can say the Revolutionary War was just about slaveholders who didn't want to pay taxes. And there was that! Absolutely. But there were also 18-y.o. boys who stood out on Lexington Green with a musket and faced down the most powerful army in the world.

It's a long fight, one that goes back to 1776 and well before. But in every generation, there are those who fought back against oppression and hate, and did what they could to make the words of the Declaration of Independence real.

Yep. One of the biggest blind spots people have is assuming that underneath, others share the same basic values as them. They have trouble imagining an ideology that is completely misaligned with theirs.

The courts have already done a number of federalism, it's very possible that it weakens a lot more to the point where we're 50 different countries in an economic customs union.

Werner Herzog directing a Maybelline ad: Perhaps she is born with it. What a frightful notion, to be imbued with the fetters of capitalist commodification from birth. It suggests God Himself is a part of our dreadful pattern instead of a refuge from it.

Anyway if this were a parliamentary system Congress could have held a vote of no confidence and Dems could choose a new leader. Maybe it *should* be a parliamentary system. Can we please consider what might be best for the country instead of clinging to a 235-year-old constitution?
