new zealand has the avenue of the disappearing mountain, where an optical illusion causes the mountain ahead of you to get smaller as you approach, but an invisible mountain is slightly more impressive.

When I was TAing a structural geology class in grad school, the senior & very southern professor explained in detail to the class how he had named Chunky Gal Mountain in western North Carolina after a “voluptuous young woman [he] once knew.” One of them turned an impressive shade of beet red.
