I think the strangulation of physical media is a huge factor in film mattering less to people. You loved some silly-ass movie? There it was on your shelf, begging for a replay. The director sat down to do commentary. Its presence in your home was tangible. Now it’s just a blip on just another app.

Well and like...literally it was expensive to buy the physical media. You had to actually care enough about the movie or music to want to own it, store it, move it. Yeah of course people value it less when access to what feels like the entire history of film or music costs a few bucks a month

It's also a way media can control us and control our viewing habits. If a movie is on streaming only they can make it disappear at a click of a mouse.

I'd offer a bit of a reframe. For most of history, owning entertainment just wasn't a thing. You had to go to see performances. Having access to a particular piece whenever you want is extremely new. The way people interact with that opportunity must be expected to change with the technology. 1/

I own a few dozen DVDs but I don't own a TV set, I use my laptop to consume most media. My latest laptop doesn't have a DVD/CD drive so I bought a separate device. Only to discover that the software I'd need to run it with my laptop...is subscription. So I don't watch my DVDs.

I have genuinely paid for a streamable copy of a film or show I own on disc rather than faff about with physical media. I am, as I type, watching a show on Prime that I own on DVD.

100%. Media in general has been devalued and treated as disposable by companies for the last decade and now they’re wondering why new things don’t catch on the way they used to.

I have a big library of Blu-ray discs I have painstakingly collected and loved. I showed it to my 20-year-old niece (thinking all this will be hers one day) and she shrugged. “I just download stuff,” she said and I stifled a cry as my heart broke.

Disney's decades-long tactic of vaulting a film for a while, then making a big event about releasing it on home media, paid off in spades every time, and even they seem to have forgotten about it.

There’s something to that, but remember that for about 9 decades, there were almost no physical (home) media versions of films. Fewer entertainment options, too, of course. Baseball was also really big.

Same thing with physical albums. I used to be able to recite entire discographies from certain artists.

I still buy movies on BluRay and DVD. Streaming services can add and drop movies or shows at anytime. This is lumped in the same bucket of wanting to own software instead of signing up for another subscription.

Yeah, that probably contributes…I wonder about attention compression as well. Novels > Novellas > Pulps > Magazines > Tabloids > Comics > Telegram > SMS > Emoji Film > Serial > Sitcom > Short > Clip Lots of compression.

Growing up, we displayed our VHS collection on shelves in our living room. Almost everyone did. It was a personal library you were proud of. I think a big part of the reason records have resurged is for the same reason. And people have always displayed their books.

I think it’s not that films don’t matter, it’s that nobody actually likes going to the movie theater. It stinks, the chairs are uncomfortable, you get blasted with ads, and there’s a good chance the other patrons will be rude, but the staff can’t do anything because they’re barely afloat.

There was a phase there where I taped a ton of stuff to my VCR. I rarely watched most of it, I realized. And now I have a bazillion VHS tapes rotting in the basement. But I watch a lot of old stuff streaming bc I can find it fast. So...🤷‍♂️

Oddly enough, for some of our patrons, it's had the opposite effect. Annoyed because they couldn't buy certain shows on DVD, I watched them slowly become film aficionados who sought out obscure titles & started requesting we buy interesting titles from shops like Vinegar Syndrome.

Was thinking something similar about music the other day. In the old days one of the first things I would do the first time in a new friend’s home would be to flip through their record collection.
