The Star Wars thing I posted yesterday has reminded me that most ppl don't seem to understand something can be schlocky but also be great, influential, and important. It can be cheesy and goofy and still have a great message. Just stop taking it all so fucking seriously.
1960s TV Writer: "If we just come out and say the important social message we'll likely get called 'Commies' and get fired."
Other 1960s TV Writer: "What if we give the guy saying it some extra eyes, and have him say it to another guy dressed in a oversized rubber suit?"
Some people just can't stand to enjoy 'bad' things. Watching a ton of B-list movies can help you really develop a sense of appreciation for the art of filmmaking, having fun with a movie that doesn't stick the landing or have a big enough budget. The cheese is part of the charm!
I saw someone argue that Congo _couldn’t_ be a B-movie because it was written by Crichton. And I’m thinking that Crichton’s forte is B-sci fi. Jurassic Park is a B-movie, but done with high-end aesthetics. It’s great, well-done schlock, but schlock nonetheless!
I'll go one further and say that if you want to put lofty topics into the pop culture space it has to be carried, at least a little bit, by shlock. It's the medium for selling ideas.
The long lines we stood in when the original came out were that long because people wanted to have fun. Fun movie, like a cool new Flash Gordon. It was revolutionary. No other special/visual effects film was that advanced, nowhere near, so far behind. Impact on us! Consider it won 6 Oscars that year
Yeah, It's a fandom that got absolutely captured by toxic culture war idiots since TLJ came out. I just tune it out at this point. I spent 20 years reading mediocre EU stuff that contradicted itself every other book. Who cares, it's space wizards and space cowboys! It's supposed to be fun!
it's like all the kids who didn't understand that Dark Knight Returns is supposed to be satire tried to take control of every fandom. "Must be dark! Must be gritty!"
I spent time recently reading old game magazines and forums. There is this sweaty, desperate reaching to make the things that are great treated like "important and serious art" by imposing a Hollywood style. It's why fans want everything adapted into a movie/tv show. It's a weird lack of confidence
The transformers fandom could definitely learn from that too. The number of people upset because Transformers Earthspark "went woke" just... I hear anyone saying that irl is getting slapped.
