Several ago, a senior researcher was telling people about how they should use resource X. I questioned them about what would happen to that resource when the grant ran out. They said, get another grant. I did not find that answer to instill confidence. They did not appreciate my take. So it goes.

This should be understood by Minister Collins as it was the Fifth National Government that pulled that funding from existing science funding to create the challenges in the first place.

The one point I will clarify from this otherwise very good article is that while the National Science Challenges were always time-limited, their funding was pulled from *existing* science funding. That's practically a whole Marsden Fund gone, relative to 2014.

Nicely written, @hendysh.bsky.social. Since reading the judgement and the release by UoA, I have been left wondering where is the honor in their actions, before, during, and after the court case? Children are taught to apologise when they have wronged someone. What about VCs?

It’s a fucked up system when you’re one person going up against an organisation like the university who are happy to bathe in the glory when their academics are praised for their work, but turn their backs when things get dark & nasty for same academics doing God’s work.

My reading of the judgement indicates that $20,000 is the maximum amount that could be awarded. I really wish this was being highlighted, because, yeah, $20K doesn't seem like much. "Siouxsie Wiles awarded the MAXIMUM amount in judgement." feels a whole lot different.

This is important news. It clearly sets an expectation that employers will care for staff who face threats as part of their jobs, and it explicitly calls out how cruel it was for Auckland University to effectively punish Wiles for her own harassment.

There seem to be many situations here where the manufacturers have agreements for one NZ supplier. That results in 0 competition and pricing that reflects that.

Sure, for wide access/adoption, the barriers to use need to be much lower than currently exist in places like the US. My assumption 'GE is allowed' was meant to be very broad. Sorry it wasn't clear. 'path to market' presupposes the way to adoption. There are others that might ought to be considered.

Assuming GE is allowed, for me, the elephant in the room is how intellectual property around it is handled. Will the balance be towards enhancing food security for communities or BAU increasing profits for AgriPetroChem companies? 30+ years of the latter promoting artificial scarcity is the norm.

We do this one every winter. Substitute kumara for the sweet potato and it is lovely. The immersion blender makes things much easier. I've done it with a regular blender as well. This one is super filling. It freezes well.
