I use Siril for stacking, then GraXpert to remove the background gradient and minimize the noise. I then put it back in Siril for photometric calibration and stretching, and do final touchups in GIMP.

About 4 years ago, the county dug up the main sewer line here and razed our little woodland. They left a mud pile. When I started paying attention to this area in February, it was covered in ivy, Virginia creeper, pine tree sprouts, and rocks. I’m pretty proud of where we are now, but more to do. 🌱

Thank goodness it’s finally started raining, because I have to leave again for a work trip. 😕 I did manage to hand weed about 95% of the chamber bitter out of here, so hopefully it will still look ok when I return. There was so much it looked like a green carpet 🌱

We sometimes get 3-filter color information (depends on weather, etc) but haven’t yet tried to constrain the asteroid shape! The semester is much too short, but that’s really cool you were able to get that far!

(1) they are abundant, (2) they move relative to the stars by a noticeable amount, (3) and they change in brightness over the course of a few hours. This makes them great targets for students to learn how to apply basic observational and analysis tools, and to have some interesting results! 🔭 🧪 👩🏻🔬

Every spring, I teach an observing class where students go to the telescope, collect their own data and calibrations overnight, then bring everything home and analyze it. The last several years, I have focused our observations on asteroids because: 🔭 🧪 👩🏻🔬

Doesn’t seem to be any new damage in the past ~2 weeks, and elderberry is supposed to be yucky to deer. So I’m hoping it was just a juvenile that learned its lesson. Plenty of other things around that they like a lot more. Guess we will see!

New growth on my elderberry after a deer munched it nearly clean! 🌱 I wanted resilient plants adapted for my area, and it’s so cheering to see the recovery beginning — though I knew in my head it should be fine, it was hard to see the damage nonetheless

A reasonable attempt to stitch together two partially overlapping fields. Don’t only let your eye be drawn only to the globular cluster, M13. A faraway galaxy, NGC 6207, is also visible! 🔭 🧪

M102, the Spindle Galaxy, is a spiral galaxy, viewed edge-on from our vantage point. It’s about 44 million light years away and about 77,000 light years across. 🔭 🧪
M102 is similar in size and shape to our own galaxy, just much much farther away! More here: science.nasa.gov/mission/hubb...
