The thing with these guys is they view communications media (speech, fiction, film, TV series, drama, you name it) as data transmission and nothing more. The Great Gatsby is a list of events and characters and if you can cut that down to 500 words, you're maximizing something.

On an episode to episode level I find it very compelling but there’s this sense that the high stakes of any given episode have no longer term weight. Mold? Red tape? Bad inspections? All hand-waved away.

Here’s my prediction on post-election rhetoric: Young voters will be to blame because China used TikTok to radicalize them, black voters will be blamed for “staying on the couch,” which is actual DNC phrasing btw, and Palestinian voters in Michigan will be selfish, “single issue” betrayers.

This is kind of a strawman, though, right? No one expects blockbusters to engage meaningfully in Real World Problems. I do think there’s a non-stupid way to acknowledge the biggest thing that happened in any of our lifetimes in the ambience of nominally realistic/naturalistic small scale dramas.

Around the time this was released, my serial-entrepreneur eldest brother was trying to put together a contract to set up internet cafes at H-E-B's in San Antonio. I remember him talking up his interest in installing this game in those cafes, completely unaware it lacked a multiplayer option.
