Incidentally, I remember when Al Gore was an exceptionally well qualified candidate but the media hammered him into the ground and literally made up stuff about him because they didn’t like him

Curious how France is described as political chaos because two parties with ≈60% of the seats in Parliament will negotiate a PM, whereas Netanyahu is always described as the will of the Israeli people, rather than the negotiated choice among eight parties with 53% of the seats.

lots of people have learned the wrong lesson from discovering that there is a dark side to the overly simplistic history/civics/etc. you were taught as a child : knowing about that dark side doesn’t mean that you’re smarter than everyone else.

nome’s framing if it as reflexive is actually helpful to me, since people don’t appear moved by logic around this. but both servsafe and kashrut are (completely different) logic systems at the core, which i respond to more.

i’ve seen people go both directions after servsafe training. kashrut’s the stickier wicket, with it being an ultimately metaphorical contamination that nonetheless has a physical component to it.

cool! a friend of mine has a kid who has latched on to an emesis bag as a comfort object, and he’s lucky he knows so many doctors who will just grab him a few from work when he needs them.

when the options are
a) get a sick kid out of their bed, strip the bed, strip the kid, hose down the kid, remake the bed, and get the kid back into bed knowing you’re going to have to do it again within the hour (and they’re actively vomiting the whole time)
b) washing a bowl
i think most say b.

like, even with the level of contamination aversion both servsafe and kashrut inspire, i can’t imagine being grossed out by this. and i wonder how many people hold on to this aversion through their first time parenting a kid with a GI bug.

not saying you’ll die without it, but cleaning a bowl vs. stripping a bed? no contest.

something plastic that is likely to hold on to smells (and already have some that would exacerbate nausea) sounds way worse than a bowl that can be easily washed and sterilized.

it’s for when kids are sick. they don’t always have enough warning from their bodies before stuff starts coming out. or adults, when they are too sick to get out of bed and to the bathroom in time. since most people don’t have a chamber pot, a large bowl serves this purpose.

like, i can understand avoiding testing because you’ve convinced yourself it’s allergies or whatever, or even deciding to go to an outside event while masked, but the idea of intentionally being unmasked around (hundreds of) people while testing positive is truly vile.

Functional political systems are *supposed to be* boring! It should be sewage specialists arguing over what size pipe is most efficient for the city layout! It should be debates over whether to put a mural or a frieze in the new park!
“Interesting politics” are when people start dying!

Sometimes I wonder if allowing the right-wing think tanks to frame every issue as ‘heads we win, tails you lose’ for the last 50 years did even more damage than Reagan’s economy or Gingrich throwing out the unspoken guardrails in Congress.

In addition to being immoral and reprehensible, the political calculus here is so stupid. Anti-trans lunatics are a fringe movement and they are so solidly GOP that not a single one would ever vote Biden
