This gif made me fall in love with the Pallas' cat, Otocolobus manul. Named in honor of Prussian zoologist Peter Simon Pallas, they occupy a large range from Central Asia to Iran and the Himalayas.
They're stealth predators exclusively of small mammals: squirrels, pika, voles, gerbils.
This specialization makes them no threat to livestock. which reduces human threats, but they were hunted for fur in large numbers.
They're not much bigger than domesticated housecats.
The ears being down on the side of the head may be an adaptation to low-profile peeking over rocks for prey items.
I love them. I will look at every single photo and thread whenever someone posts about them, even if I've seen the pictures before. They're just so neat. Fluffy little badasses with some of the judgiest-looking faces in nature.
