Star Trek showed that achieving that utopia required as much work on the ground as it did in space. San Fransisco, Paris, and New Orleans all had people walking to shops and restaurants on their way to work, with clean air and public services. The big improvements were in society before technology.

We got tricked by science fiction into thinking a futuristic city is all about flying cars and crystal towers and hologram billboards but what it really looks like is nice apartment blocks, good mass transit, pedestrian zones with shade trees and safe bike lanes.

My classes in math and science prepared me for many things in my work, but choosing colors for a figure wasn't one of them. I think conferences need to have a graphic design workshop would do a lot of junior scientist some good.🧪⚒️

I grew up with Southern grandparents who insisted that shoes be worn at all times to prevent pneumonia. They even required us to wear shoes in July because "our feet will get cold". They would rather vacuum the whole house daily than admit that foot temperature was unrelated to lung infections.

Google search is degrading so fast that I can't find something I did a successful search for yesterday. In less than 24 hours I went form being able to find a dozen academic sources on the first page to getting two pages of AI generated blogs and a bunch of unrelated topics for misspellings.

We have to boil our tap water before we use it for several days at a time, several times a year, minimally. If this is news to you, it’s time to start paying closer attention to how conservative politics are entrenched and spreading. We are not “red” - we are voter suppressed.

Its incredibly frustrating to spend hours making a carefully researched video, post it, and immediately get an ad for Amazon's #1 geology book that's climate denying garbage from a retired junior high teacher. I have to not only provide information, but also fight marketing algorithms.

So he's shoveling venture capitalist money from his current pyramid shaped startup into another startup he has huge interests in, and is telling employees "hold this bag whenever the feds come by". Seems like a perfectly normal and not wildly unethical business practice.

This Pride Month it's important to remember, rainbow agate is just a marketing term. Iris agate is more technically correct, and has less of a markup. The "rainbow" name also refers to the prismatic effect when light passes through, so any large pieces you see are dyed. Keep your minerals ethical!

I posted two videos to TikTok today. One listing some basic facts about a mineral, the other saying climate change is real. The mineral video got 237 views (which is good for my content), and the climate change video got a whopping 4. Sharing science online is hard.
