The thing that gets me about all of the suggested replacements is that they will do nothing about congestion in Manhattan, which was the point of all of this! The MTA funding is more pressing for obvious reasons, but the end goal was always fewer cars.

The real story is the MTA and NY gov't have neglected the subway for so many decades that it needs a huge new influx of cash to get it back on track. Why is subway maintenance SO much more expensive now than 70 years ago? Why can't the MTA run a service as reliable as in the friggin 50s?
