I sent this message to the UMass administration yesterday:
"I was looking forward to speaking next week at UMass Amherst. I visited two years ago and everyone was awesome. My nephew graduated from there and got a great education. But calling the cops on peaceful protesters is a shameful act...” 1/2
That is regretful as I was looking forward to hearing you speak. My student was there, saw, and heard firsthand the hateful vitriol being spewed: it was not 100% peaceful. Fact: this group of protesters knew that they violated campus policy, were warned about being arrested, and did it anyway.
I am faculty member at UMass (and a great admirer of your work): I applaud your decision and am grateful for this act of solidarity with our students and faculty.
“...I have to withdraw as your commencement speaker. I give all my best wishes and congratulations to the class of '24 and pray for the safety of the Palestinian people, the return of the hostages, and an end to this terrible war.” 2/2
I’m disappointed on the students’ behalf, because I am sure you would have given a great speech, but I also know they will understand and support the reasons behind your decision
they have deserved so much better from the university administration in many ways
best to you on this difficult choice
