These days mainly I do DIY and chase dogs. I also run a tiny gym with the best view in Aotearoa. Also a recovering academic. Father to a disabled kid so I do the advocacy thing as well.

New Zealanders! I need your help (+ you could win a $100 voucher). Here is a link to a survey I'm running about #GreenHydrogen and its potential uses in NZ. I'd be super grateful if you would do the survey (10mins) and please share #CleanEnergy otago.au1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_...

“It really could change the name of the game. If it is found that the University of Auckland didn’t fulfil their obligations or do enough to protect their employees, that could have a huge flow-on effect for all businesses across the country.”

Exactly, speaking at community groups, schools for free and sometimes businesses. The private sector often pay a fee, helps fund research. Normal business.

People are just discovering that academics often do ‘other work’ to support their research work. I’ve done this so often, small consulting projects funding grading buyout so I can conduct interviews etc… normal business.

I'm still grading exams. 11yo walks through my office regularly, points at the script in passing and declares the grade based on the handwriting quality and colour. If only it was this simple... sigh.

Lots of warning signals in recent econ data. First up, net bank lending has basically stopped and is going backwards in real terms; in fact, it looks a lot like 2009. Net bank lending is a critical source of economic stimulus. No stimulus = slump = unemployment up = more slumping etc. [🧵1/n]

Without a solid government commitment to pricing ag emissions, NZ research on ag ghg mitigation is unlikely to get the backing it needs to make it to market. As this article explains, our farming system will fall further behind.

🚨Here we go. A precedent-setting case, with huge implications for workplaces worldwide - including Aotearoa. “An employment section of the Lima High Court court declared COVID-19 as an occupational disease applicable to all types of workers, not just healthcare professionals.”

Hey NZ folks, I'm still on the lookout for a new role! If you need (or know someone who needs) a person with experience in building environmental measurement frameworks, scientific research, and communicating science in the startup space...let's chat! Or a boost to your networks is appreciated too.

This is so real. I’ve reported on this over the years in many forms. Coral reef scientists. Conservationists caring for endlings. Public health workers in the pandemic. Journalists covering all the above. The people bearing witness are not okay.

it's cool how Netanyahu is on record saying they have to prop up Hamas to undermine Fatah, and Hamas's funding comes mostly from gulf oil monarchies, and the American press looks at this situation and decides the ultimate responsibility for Hamas's terrorism lies with American College Students

I wonder if Winston Peters will make an appearance today at the revolution at Parliament? In my estimation, the anti-co-governance campaign is in fact an NZ First by stealth campaign.

This is the language of an abuser:

“We care about these people. We love these people. We want them to do well, we want them to be able to flourish and we actually need to make sure they're clear about the obligations," he said.”

I also use viraleze and cepacol mouthwash when i've been in riskier places, doesn't eliminate risk at all, but reducing initial load matters, and possibly a lot.

It is so hard. I've got kids at school who don't mask. So that is the biggest risk. I always wear a mask in indoor spaces, except if I have measured the CO2 and worked out ventilation myself. I lecture in a theatre with up to 100 students, but only if the CO2 is below 700, with a purifier on.

A mini-class on Class via Marx: Capital needs you to be both a worker & a consumer, you make the things and then you buy the things. The rich get richer on both sides of that. The VAST majority of small biz owners in NZ are not capital. They work and they consume. The rich do not work, only consume.
