My article "Rationing by Inconvenience: How Insurance Denials Induce Administrative Burdens" is now officially out with the Journal of Health Politics, Policy, and Law. I hope you give it a read and enjoy! Well, maybe "enjoy" is the wrong word. read.dukeupress.edu/jhppl/articl...

Oh, how heartbreaking. Grateful to his wife for sharing that “he spoke of his concussions often. I remember the exact moment he told me his heart condition (that forced) him to retire was a blessing because he couldn’t take another hit. He knew his hockey career had a profound impact on his brain.”

Good reporting on an entirely predictable problem. Fun fact: Airbnb also covers up thousands of sexual assaults every year! Its internal safety team has "cool-down rooms" to take a break from the trauma of what they hear. It's a bad company, a bad industry, and people should just stay in hotels.

I get that European soccer fans are different but I still thought it was a bold choice by Spain fans (after defeating GER in the quarterfinals) to launch into trumpeting and chanting WHILE the carillon was still chiming for the Rathaus-Glockenspiel in Munich

WTF. The electric company in Texas doesn't have a map of outages so people have been using the Whataburger App to figure out who lost power. This is like when Homer was using the Krusty Burger map when they got lost at sea.

47 years ago we emigrated from South Africa. I was 9 weeks old and my mother was sure I’d sleep through most of the 12 hr flight. I had pressure problems with my ears and howled for about 10 of those hours. My mom says she can still see the faces of the people on that flight.

Religious exemptions to the ACA get treated as pretty marginal. @lindsaywiley.bsky.social and I reframe religious liberty challenges to the ACA as central to the campaign against social insurance in the US. They aren't built on a libertarian ethos but on a powerful message of take care of your own

It is of course good to learn about the past! And our complicity in mass atrocity. This memory culture is important for a variety of reasons. But the notion that such remembrance is a viable anti-stigma mechanism is supported by little evidence and even less theory. 5/

Ignorance may be a multiplier, but it’s not the root cause of structural stigma. The result: We are not going to educate ourselves out of racial animus. The notion that if we learn about the Shoah we can avoid repeating it is IMO not much more than a pious hope. 4/

The historical examples of antisemitism in the modern era show VERY clearly that Jew hatred is hardly a function of a lack of knowledge or awareness of Jewish people. Read “Neighbors” for goodness sake.

While it’s true that contact btw in-groups and out-groups can in some circumstances reduce stigma, it’s also true that the people on the hill can know the people in the valley very well, for centuries, and can still stigmatize and discriminate against the latter 2/

“Generally believed” on the basis of weak evidence. I’m an expert on stigma and discrimination and the root causes are power and structural violence. Ignorance may be a multiplier but it’s not a root cause of stigma including racial animus. Goffman pointed it out in his original book (1963): 1/

Yeah, pretty similar. I grew up in a very hot and humid place even before climate crisis, and never liked heat and humidity. So every summer felt like it was endless and I hated being outside. Add in the anxiety from tropical cyclone-watching for months on end and it was a struggle.

I'm not having a mental health issue, but I haven't liked the summer since I was a kid. I like schedules/routine & hate hot weather. Now I'm an adult living in a city, so my friends frequently go away, and now it's much hotter. And much less structure for my kid. I adapt, but it's not awesome.

Well, well, well. WELL. That whole “protests made cops feel bad so they all quit” narrative? Looks like it was mostly myth. Excited to read this paper by Ben Grunwald, who compiled a huge dataset on post-2020 police employment. Agg decline was 1%… and bigger local declines not tied to protests.

We’ve know that protection from other people is many gun owners’ #1 reason for gun ownership. But protection from whom? And in what circumstances? 🤔 We asked! Turns out it’s more complex than a “primary reason for owning” focus implies.

I have panic disorder and am a public health guy and am very risk-averse but my 💯 main goal with covid recovery was to minimize the risk of long covid and POTS as best I could. For me that meant taking two weeks off from exercise after the acute phase ended.
