10 years ago, gay Americans could not get married and have it count in all 50 states
20 years ago, you could be made uninsurable because you got sick once
30 years ago, HIV was a death sentence
40 years ago, acid rain was still a problem
Dedicated public servants keep pushing good things forward
Boy, people sure do get mad when you point out that some things have improved and that we should keep working hard on the things that haven't instead of sitting on the sidelines in a huff.
Before they had a name for it my grandma knew to pull in the laundry if it looked like rain or was close to sunrise/sunset.
Otherwise it got holes in it.
If Trump wins public servants will no longer be safe in their jobs. They will be beholden to him and only do his bidding. Everything will change. Vote for Biden and save democracy.
The idea that history must follow a narrative arc is a deeply unhelpful one. 'Things' do not all have to travel in the same direction at the same time.
I don’t disagree but you could argue the exact opposite of looking at campaign finance, voting rights act, environmental regulations, etc.
I’d argue the reason people on the left are mad is that more is being torn down than built up, and I think it’s due to the courts not being held to account
Don’t mean to be too bong-rippy here, but I honestly think it comes from a lot of people (and Western philosophers/critical theorists in the past) undervaluing the awesome but gentle power of persuasion and implementing systems of social consensus, and overvaluing ideals of “power” or “control”.
Once again, people like that operate on the magic wand theory. They live in a fantasy world where someone possesses the ability to make everything exactly the way *they* want it to be in an instant. It's an excuse to be lazy and to whine, moan, and complain that they didn't get everything they want.
What’s the point of these arguments? The court is poised to overturn gay marriage/sodomy laws, has gutted healthcare reform, and we’re rapidly backsliding on trans rights. Everyone knows life is better now than 50 years ago. Not a fan of the “well, just don’t worry, it’ll be fine” attitude.
There are definitely ways in which the world has become better but conversely many others in which it hasn't. Hans Rosling's Factfulness pretty much sums these things up, even though I disagree with him on a ton of things, and you may like it yourself if you haven't read it.
Ah, yes, but you see other than those things - and also numerous other improvements like internet connectivity and renewable energy generation - things have gotten worse in ways that guy, specifically has noticed, so therefore it is "the key problem."
55 years ago a mixed race couple’s marriage wasn’t recognized in all states. This is where the GOP wants to take us and they will definitely reimplement segregation. They are already alluding to it.
Institutions make or break nations and change the course of history. Bureaucracies are the oldest and most storied institutions in human history, from the Church to China and everywhere in between.
Regulators, rule-writers, and investigators get shit done. Big ups to the civil service
