People don't remember this anymore, but after Obama's bad first debate with Romney he dropped by ~4 percentage points in the national head-to-heads.
There's no archive for 538 for 2012 (thanks NYT), but RCP's average (for what that's worth) shows this as well.
The debate was October 3rd.
What the hell is the RNC doing right now? Do they just look at the NYT and say, you know what, this earned media is better than what we could do right now, so let's save the money for later?
This is besides the main point of the article, but I wonder what "the kind of public appearances necessary to quell these complaints" would entail, bc by my count Biden has made 5 public appearances since Thursday, all of them perfectly fine/good, but they dont seem to count for the feeding frenzy
It’s worth noting that Trump has no campaign events scheduled at this time.
The dude glitches, lies all the time, and says the most bizarre shit, but somehow Jake Tapper isn’t calling for him to do a two-hour press conference to settle concerns about his fitness.
Dems: Joe Biden, who is currently governing quite well but is also old, should drop out.
GOP: Trump, who is a convicted felon and led a coup, is our nominee and we will eviscerate anyone in the party who disagrees
Media: The bigger story here is age.
Citizen Kane is *83 years old* and if it was made today people would consider it an unsubtle commentary on specifically the very current political situation of this week
I just don't know how you can read the first four graphs of body of the story where Biden goes “gee, if people keep thinking these things about me I’m going to have a hard time winning” and walk away with BIDEN IS CONSIDERING DROPPING OUT unless you're being willingly obtuse.
One way to understand AG Sulzberger’s obsession over Biden’s age is this is his last chance to prove that NYT has the juice to make some kind of dent with its reporting. Otherwise he’s the inheritor of a low-status crosswords-and-cooking empire, like some common Newhouse

I will give them this: We win if we’re talking about abortion, healthcare, climate, jobs, and labor + Trump’s track record and plans on abortion and tax cuts for the rich.
The focus on his age is misguided. But that’s where the focus is now and if Biden can’t change that, then he is a distraction.
SPORTS TALK RADIO HOST: keep calling in; Mike in Glendale, you’re on the air
MIKE: hey thanks for taking my call. we were talking about how Matt Stafford is too old to be a franchise guy now, Jimmy G’s the backup but we know he can’t get it done. wouldn’t it be cool if Shohei Ohtani lined up at
Heritage ghoul in a to camera interview: We are literally going to kill you
Average bsky tankie: the Dems are the worst possible political party and Biden in particular is the worst possible person
Hmm, how did we end up here
The freakout was over "is Biden declining" and all available evidence points to "he is old but no, he's mentally fine" and so now the freakout has moved on to the freakout being itself evidence of Biden's need to stepdown. It's entirely circular.
This is like a half notch below the baseball crank trying to connect Biden’s dogs having issues with the tragedy of the Beau/Hunter dynamic. This shit is a game to them.
Look, I know, there is a lot of cringey shit lib posting out there, but the real reason folks are so adamant about the importance of your vote is that it is the last nonviolent way to prevent a fascist takeover of the federal government.
If you don’t vote, you will not like the next steps.
These are the stakes. This is one of the premier organs of “intellectual conservatism,” and they see the immunity ruling as transformative and revolutionary, and they are signaling the willingness to do violence to defend their gains. Make everyone you know understand these stakes.
I want them to weep when they lose. I want them to sit there, crying into their celebratory wines, knowing that they will never have power and that they will be a footnote in history. I want them laid low, to suffer the pains of knowing that they have lost, forever.
The reality is that, so far, there's little polling evidence that Biden's lost much support since the debate. But that's not gonna permeate the bluesky ecosystem because election/polling twitter didn't migrate over here.
They have, but it is getting absolutely buried. Push notifications, newsletters, placement on the website and the paper are just so obviously framed with an eye on pushing the “Joe is old” story
Someone was *just* talking about how if there are any legs to Biden actually suffering from mental issues we'd start seeing staffers leaking. Now THE biggest pusher of this story comes out with just that & the tea is so weak it might as well be warm water.
