Hurricane Beryl is likely going to make landfall in Texas in a few days. Corpus Christi to Galveston...Pay attention as tracks have been trending eastward (and may continue so) and possible intensification over the Gulf of Mexico. Plenty of warm water and favorable shear.... The future is here

Sea surface temperatures are substantially warming around the entire #Arctic Ocean in July during the satellite-era. This is especially large in the Kara Sea. Note the blue shading mostly corresponds to areas of sea ice.

"I view public engagement as an inherent part of my scholarship." Hear hear! Public engagement specifically improves my scholarship, exposing me to viewpoints I might not have otherwise considered, leading to better research questions. Outreach provides grist for the mill for a curious scientist.

Would you stand in a lightning storm holding a metal stick? Would you stand on the beach as a landfalling Cat 5 storm is happening? Exactly....Treat dangerous heat like the risk it is. Extreme temperatures are the deadliest weather events in the U.S. annually #heatdome #itsnottheheatyougrewupwith

Worked on this piece about for several days. It is a deep dive on extreme hurricane chaser Josh Morgerman and his hurricane house in Mississippi. He told me he would ride out a Cat 5 in it.

The garage calls on the traffic tip line have increased steadily over the years—people are overreactive, less capable of critical thinking, and less considerate. Lots of calls from scanner people posing as ground truth too.

Humans aren’t the only ones who are susceptible to bias: it has been shown in newly-evolving AI!  How can we nip these glitches in the bud before they could potentially get out of hand?

We have @profamymcgovern on the show this week to break it down: linktr.ee/WeatherGeeks

That’s exactly what’s happening. We make up our mind in advance, typically based on our ideology and social network, and then we use our brain to go out and look for reasons to prove we’re right. It’s called motivated reasoning. @drshepherd2013.bsky.social has a good TED talk on this
