The electoral problem has become, as the IRA gloated to Thatcher, that the GOP only needs to get lucky once and the Democrats need to be lucky forever.
Either they’re going to do something about the court - now, not eventually - or we will simply play iterations of this game until the GOP wins.
I would also like to point out that the constitution is not a suicide pact and when your opponents pass an enabling act by judicial fiat *while you still control the executive*, you in fact have an obligation to carry out the course of action they are preparing to take themselves, should you lose
I want to know why we aren't imagining what Biden can do with this new power granted by SCOTUS? Seems like he could "fix" that problem forever and it would not be prosecutable for the next few months
It's a ratcheting move toward the right and the issue is this is by design. Ever since the surrender of the Confederacy the electorate has been biased against people and toward land
Even if they get 50 senators on board they don't have the congressional majority to pack the court.
As a non-USian I'm watching the rather rapid slide of your country towards a managed democracy in horror. Not sure how you arrest it now.
Counterpoint (with maybe some wishful thinking): if Trump dies tomorrow, the GOP is fucking licked, maybe for good. Who's their next candidate? Literally no one.
I get that there's a court that will continue to give the minority party power but that breaks without the cult behind it.
Beau made this point, that right now the American people literally have to get every single election right either until this ruling can be over turned or it can be written out.
Unlike anybody under 50, most of the Democratic leadership has memories of a time when the Court was not explicitly hostile to democracy, which turns out has given them a PRETTY BIG blind spot.
Unfortunately, the time to have done something about this was years ago. Like, during the first two years of Obama's presidency, when they actually had the legislative power to expand the court and impeach Thomas.
No. There will be no more iterations of this. This is full stakes, even if Biden gets in again, the court will function as a rouge entity under democratic majority. They either address this now or lose the power to stop the GOP regardless of who is president. Being lucky forever isn't even enough.
It doesn’t feel like the threat of a new Trump term backed by all his institutional enablers is being taken seriously by anyone with any power to do anything about it.
It’s obvious to anyone willing to open their eyes and see that there is one person and one person only who is able to turn back the tide of crime under the guise of immunity:
Danny Glover
