Heads, up. USB ports are disappearing. Got caught out recently on that one. I also tell people to email it to themselves.

When my new Surface tablet moved to exclusively USB-C, I found myself scrambling to find a new memory stick for backups. Luckily, they exist.

Why is transferring files safely and securely such a nightmare? I hate how they keep trying to lock us in, give me universal file formats, headphone jacks, USB ports and the ability to simply connect two devices, say phone and laptop, with a cable and access files.

Thanks and good advice. When I've been working away from my home computer I usually email the files to myself in case they didn't save to the data stick, but then I'm super paranoid about backups.

Having a local copy of the one file you need is definitely sensible but people are going to see an issue with this weird belt and braces system UniSuper built, think 'cloud storage isn't safe' and end up with improvised contraptions far more likely to lose their data than a real cloud service

That email is run by someone else, likely the cloud provider you think you don't trust and now your important files are in multiple folders and messages and you lose track of which version is which. Get a real backup service or software, with three external storage locations for important things

Had to buy a lightning-usb dongle to connect to my newest laptop. The kid in the electronics dept was surprised and learned something that day when we finally found what I needed.

One of the ironies of the computer age is that in theory we have so many ways to send and store data, but emailing files to yourself is the one that we all use. It may not be elegant but it *works*.

Email servers are also "someone else's computer". If you need to have it on your phone, email can be a transmission method, but save a local copy. Your phone also contains a portable hard drive. Your email account does not.

The infosec team at my job has taken the dramatic step of blocking all external drives from work computers. They want us to share and backup everything on the cloud. It stinks!

I always bring a USB-A and a USB-C hub/dongle whenever I am going to a place where we are speaking. It amazes me how often I show up and there are no free ports at all. So I have to free some up for my presentation.

Well, USB-A is disappearing due to being obsoleted by USB-C We are just in the awkward transitional period where you basically always have to carry an adapter
