No joke the first example is “make it easier to build nuclear power plants” like “yeah, we’re repealing the 20th century scientists are first against the wall but sure we’ll undertake some of the most difficult infrastructure in the world. This is coherent.”

Fun fact, when asked “Does anyone deserve to be a billionaire” Harris responded “if they earn it and work hard for it, sure”, implying it was possible to earn a billion dollars merely by working hard for it, and not, you know, through massive exploitation. www.nytimes.com/interactive/...

Not enough reporting how big a win the dictator ruling is for the Dark Enlightenment and other Neo-monarchical groups. They probably expected unchecked power would be a harder lift than this.

Human art is currently better quality than AI art, but is less profitable to produce and so is valued less by the market, because market value doesn't track quality. Even if AI art never gets beyond mediocrity, this and other AI problems will persist and will demand a basic income solution.

Trump was a stress test for our system and it’s already failed. It’s crucial to not let him get re-elected, but whether he gets elected or not, the damage is done.

Werner Herzog directing a Maybelline ad: Perhaps she is born with it. What a frightful notion, to be imbued with the fetters of capitalist commodification from birth. It suggests God Himself is a part of our dreadful pattern instead of a refuge from it.

This stands out even in a crowded field of people ignoring cautionary sci-fi tales: "Some memories are meant to cause long-lasting trauma, like the effect on the victim's body and mind or the grief of the victim's family." Do we really need to explain why rehabilitation through torture is wrong?

it's actually extremely funny that we were told we can't use Wikipedia for research in the early 2000s but Wikipedia may be the only reason we even have a somewhat coherent historical record of culture and events from the last 25 years or so and will probably be needed to create future history texts

I realized my issue with the "GPT is Bullshitting" paper. It assumes an internalist account of "concern". I think GPT is "concerned" with the truth in the same way that my thermostat is "concerned" with the temperature. Not consciously. Yet it would be odd to say the thermostat is bullshitting

Borders are luck dams and restrictive immigration is just as immoral and counterproductive as means testing welfare. It’s all the same stupid illusion of distinguishing the “deserving” from the “undeserving”.

Right, we’d need a difference that was salient to the stance-independence issue. One that wasn’t question begging, which I’ll admit feels like a daunting task.

FUCKED UP!

I truly believe nobody deserves to suffer, but wow does this make me have to really work to stay in that place emotionally. Forcing parents to experience totally unnecessary trauma like this is morally abhorrent and shows why a lack of federal protection for abortion rights is unacceptable.

But I’m too fixated on Luck right now to see if I can substantiate that intuition. Will try to come back to it post dissertation though, it’s an interesting topic to me. Meantime I guess antirealists could eliminate likely differences realists might appeal to.

Yeah, I think this would hinge on whether realists can defend a salient distinction between moral and non-moral preferences on this front. Naturally my intuition is there is one and it’s why moral disagreement makes sense in a way disagreements over food do not.

I often try to convey that AI aren’t discriminatory, they just learn that we’re discriminatory and try to help us be more efficient bigots. Tech like this exposes the reality of systemic injustice, which is good. It should not be used to actually review resumes. That’s bad.

Conservative Protestant work ethic right here. Better a thousand “deserving” people be denied service than one “undeserving” person get help. Just such a terrible view to build a society on.

This is exactly what social dominance theory predicts. The driving force behind a lot of prejudice and oppression is fear of completion between groups leading to a need for clear intergroup dominance hierarchies. Any move towards social justice threatens that, so here we are.
