Aiming typically at low information audiences: "If you hear anything about any place, mostly if it's negative, if you can travel to the place, check it out for yourself and make up your own mind." - English vlogger walking around an ethnic minority-themed attraction in Xinjiang.

We can see a sort of second wave of PRC-friendly vlogging here. It seems led more by genuine travel vloggers rather than China-based pseudo influencers, and the very lazy pro-China content, inspired by the first wave, targets the youtube algorithm rather than any state media handlers.

The newer wave of vloggers, whose content doesn't appear to be guided in any way, speak much more readily about the highly visible surveillance and are happy to share narratives normalising authoritarianism because Youtube rewards them for doing so.

It seems the whole 'I went to China' clickbait is quite a profitable travel vlogger grift these days, which in turn gets picked up by China state media and recycled within the Great Firewall.

The irony of this clickbait China travel vlog: "Completely blown away all my preconceptions, I had very bad preconceptions of China." 10 seconds later... "I'd say, like, the police force and the presence of the police is a little but worrying but we haven't done anything wrong so..."

I watched a video on X last night showing a man dancing with a group when another man suddenly stabbed him, seemingly fatally. Not the best thing to see before bed. My bad for scrolling Xitter late at night, I guess.

In the wake of a tragic attack on a Japanese woman and her child in Suzhou, Chinese social media platforms have pledged to clear up rabid nationalism online.
But at the same time, PRC state media continue to pour fuel on the fire of anti-Japanese sentiment.

I kinda feel like now that the Supreme Court has declared it legal for a president to straight-up murder people they don't like, it's probably even more important to not elect people who seem extremely inclined to murder people they don't like

In the wake of the "immunity" decision, the shocked press focused on how this hurts Jack Smith's case.
But it's much worse. The Supreme Court just blessed Trump's desire to be a dictator.
And they found a way to give that power only to Republicans.

is torture an official act? are war crimes? both are criminal under U.S. law. what happens to presidential command responsibility? also, if POTUS is immune from prosecution, there is no complementarity. the court has made it easier for the ICC to pursue cases ag american presidents.

Just at the most basic level it is really unhealthy to have to thought about Donald Trump as much as everyone in America has over the last nine or so years. Spending a decade of my life thinking about a super boring, super shitty crook and all the bad stuff he's doing or might do. It's embarrassing.

the US has one of, if not the most antiquated system of democracy on the planet. Americans need to get past their sense of exceptionalism and realise that they might actually learn something from other countries.

"The time is past" is wrong for one reason: Biden told us he was capable of this. People voted for him because they believed this. They now feel he lied to them. That he betrayed them. And so something has to be done.

Remember how outraged we all were when Trump claimed his inauguration crowd was huge, when it was obviously not? His argument was "don't believe your lying eyes." Yeah, Democrats have to be better than that or people will have a reason to say "eh, they're all the same."

The whole "he's the only one who can do this" excuse doesn't fly in the face of the fact that he couldn't speak in complete sentences in a debate. People aren't nuts to say, "Oh surely, there are plenty of people who are better at this."

You and I, of course, are super smart and plugged in and know that the threat Trump poses is very serious. But for the low info people who are skeptical, they're looking for signals from leaders that show they also are scared. Biden's decline suggests they don't take this seriously. At all.

Ultimately, I think Biden's campaign is trapped by a paradox if he continues. On one hand, Democrats are arguing that the fate of democracy is on the line. On the other, Biden can't take that threat seriously enough to let it get in the way his lifelong dream of being president.

šØš³State media published an opinion piece endorsing far right party leader Farage for the UK elections. Key point: "If, once elected, Farage and his colleagues can advocate an end to NATOās provocations and expansionism sufficiently loudly, it may give the warmongers pause for thought."
