Both things can be true. Mandatory military service is a bad idea for a variety of reasons & he is a massive hypocrite for recommending a policy that he actively avoided. And that's even excluding his references to veterans/KIAs and POWs being "suckers & losers".

I've written about this before. Hearings matter. Regardless of their outcome, they draw a line in the sand regarding what is NOT acceptable, and demonstrate that to the public. A hearing regarding Justice Alito would also show the Democrats pushing back.

You can interpret the constitutional text literally as what it meant when written, or you could adapt it to the current day & be humble about causing disruptions. But what the SCOTUS majority does is apply the first standard to Democrats and liberal causes, and the second standard to Donald Trump.
