And if Biden doesn't step aside and you had 4-6 weeks to use, would you have used it to push Biden to cede the stage or hammer on Trump. That's the question I am asking.

Perceptions are in part a feature of how the media shapes these stories. Saying this is all on Biden is not a full analysis--some of this is ginned-up controversy.

Yes, he may or may not have cognitive impairment, but he's not a psychopath. Point is we have 45 days or so until Labor Day are we going to keep banging on about this or focus on Trump. Each day Trump gets a free pass from us is good for him.

You know what? Go on about Biden's age and debate performance. Me? I'll focus on the existential threat that Donald Trump and his minions represent. We all have limited time and energy. But yet the @nytimes.com will ALWAYS insist that it has no viewpoint, no politics, they're just "doing journalism." Can someone write about this? I don't care what your politics are but please don't tell me you don't have any at all. It's just dishonest and manipulative.

The public is not responding to the debate. They are responding to the irresponsible media coverage of the debate. We are back in “but her emails” territory and there is nothing reasonable people—and actual experts—can do about it. Extraordinarily frustrating and depressing.

The key here is that "very important people" don't seem to be bothered by this. It all is horse-race politics up to this precipice: who is winning, who is losing the day? There is no there there in American political journalism at places like the NY Times. They cannot rise to the occasion.

No dictators please. His fate was awful. No way to sugar-coat it even with the poetry. But my first trip to Russia, to St. Petersburg in 93, I went into a bookstore and found Kamen, the book in which this appears and marveled that is was there, then, still.

In another life, I was a student of Silver Age Russian poetry, and loved no one more than Osip (and Nadezda) Mandelstam. It ended terribly for him. But his poetry outlasted the dictators.

I turned 60 last year. Most of my life is behind me, but my nephews, my nieces are just starting out in life. Now we enter a terrible new period in American history w/o precedent, w/ an all-powerful presidency, a Supreme Court of courtiers, and a mad-dog Congress. I'll fight. But my time is short.

I don’t know where I stand on “Biden should step aside.” I think there is one way to get this right — Biden delivers a national address as president stating that he believes his highest duty is defending the Constitution and the best way to do this is to step aside and hand the baron to Harris.

.@jbouie.bsky.social is one of the few noting there are *also* serious risks w/nominating alternative to Biden. As I suggested, we also can't be sure an alternative would fare better against Trump! Still, I lean toward thinking Bidens should take Q of whether he should withdraw a lot more seriously

Lots of people I know sorta lost it during COVID. It’s a phenomenon I have yet to be able to explain but good researchers took a very strange turn, and I can list a dozen examples.
