I was just talking to my mother yesterday about the strand of Appalachian cultural studies that views Appalachia as a matriarchy. My mother pointed out that women had power because men left or weren’t bringing in money. And as Appalachian, she told it to me in the form of a story.

When I was a baby, she had taken a job as a park wildfire firefighter. (Yes, my mama is pretty badass.) The babysitter was a coal miner’s wife, & she had been putting by food and money for 4 years, because they knew a strike was coming.

She even arranged a truck loan that specified no payments during strikes. When the strike came, they were all right, because the woman who ran the household had made it so. My mama learned that lesson well. I have a picture of tiny me sitting in her enormous garden, holding the fruit of our labors.

I built the carnivorous plants from the LEGO set last night. Very cute! They're sarracenia, dionea, and drosera, though I thought the drosera was a pinguicula until I read the little booklet just because of how the flower is growing from it.
