Hot take: I'm truly not interested in hand wringing over how much people will miss enjoying the books of men who have turned out to be abusers. I'm far more concerned about the missing art that women haven't been able to create/publish because they crossed paths with such men.

Anschließender Regionalexpress ließ dann meinen Halt unangekündigt ausfallen; musste vom 10km entfernten nächsten Kaff mit dem Auto abgeholt werden wegen einer andauernden Signalstörung - hatte schon total vergessen, dass das ja die Verkehrswende ist, nech (aber hey, wenigstens ÖPNV in Europa 🤷‍♀️) 😅🫠

The thing for me here is: this is not emergency work or anything but, apparently, this is a route with regularly planned construction work - that was not communicated at any point, and the train schedule was not adjusted beforehand at all. Ambush construction delay is quite a tactic to chose 🤪

Ah, there it is: a 10-minute delay is now a 60-minute delay (because there is a surprise construction site on our route and the train has to be diverted - don't you hate it, too, when train track construction just spontaneously manifests?!), and the last 7 stops are canceled. Hello, Deutsche Bahn 🙃.

Forgot I'm back in Europe and that a) I didn't need to bring that sweater because AC on a train does not mean "we will make you freeze" like in the US, b) "chilled" beverages are only slightly below room temperature, and c) the German stare is back. Harassing patients at abortion clinics will be illegal in Germany. Good. Two things: a) Both the CDU and the AfD voted against this. b) Keep in mind that abortion is still illegal in Germany and part of the penal code. The good news: progressive coalition building works. (That’s also one thing that I tell my students all the time: there are very successful strategies against white supremacy. They have worked historically, and still do. They need firm commitment and resources, though.) Well done after all, France.

Not gonna lie: the way that many of the colleagues and friends in the US whom I talked with these last few days about the SCOTUS decisions seem annoyed for sure but not too unnerved is, well, quite unnerving... Democratic institutions do not have inherent magical strength. This is a real crisis.

The Court ruling today is terrible but expected. I will just gently remind everyone that the election hasn’t happened yet. We shouldn’t assume the worst outcome as a foregone conclusion. That only encourages more apathy than many are already feeling.

Visiting Germany again soon, and, as always, I bought the public transportation ticket that will enable me to travel the entire country by bus, train, subway, tram, etc. everywhere for 50€ a month. It's not perfect, but man, do I miss the evil European Communist public services cabal here in the US.

It’s really hard to come to terms with the simple fact that, in many countries, fascists fare so well in elections not because people are unaware of their policies or underestimate their danger, but precisely because people endorse them wholeheartedly or opportunistically. Yet here we are.

And a little less sarcastic: basically every study has shown that universal income, etc., is greatly beneficial, not only to individuals but to society as a whole. This is not about a lack of scientific evidence. Not implementing it is about a lack of political will and small-minded spitefulness.
