I've seen enough -- this is the most radical, dangerous, arrogant, out-of-control Supreme Court in American history, and it needs to be treated as such.
It’s a declaration of war. There will be violence and death perpetrated by Trump on Americans, enabled by federal officials he’s bribed. Only hack journalists and Republicans who will materially benefit from our deaths deny this lol. We are here. @chrislhayes.bsky.social
TBF this gives the Biden administration a free hand to do some pretty crazy stuff if they wanted. I mean they won't because they don't understand how to wield power or understand the game thats being played but it would be pretty wild.
Posited until today that John Roberts would go down in history as the Chief Justice at least as bad as if not equal to Roger B. Taney. He has now exceeded Taney.
Is it dangerous enough for Biden to order these six killed and their killers pardoned?
Or at least start campaigning on expanding and packing the courts?
I see a lot of “Biden should do [blank] now.” If the answer is for the sitting president to enact dictatorial powers then we are already fucked and our institutions are dead.
That bitch will get much, much worse if Trump's fat, felonious ass gets re-elekted. Kan you imagine the type of judges will flood the federal bench if Trump is elekted and he has a reTHUGliKKKlan senate? Murika will be fucked
Not to add more discourse to the world but today feels like a good time for any Democratic SCOTUS Judge to consider retiring so Biden and a Democratic controlled Senate can appoint some 25 year olds.
You might remember, as I do, the two Trump impeachment hearings, where CJ Roberts officiated. He sat there like a bump on a log, not saying a word or even lifting any eyebrow when Trump's attorneys like Pat Cipollone, Robert Ray and Pam Bondi spewed lies. What was he even there for?
I always doubted that a right wing majority of 6, half of whom were appointed by the criminal Trump, were ever going to rule in a way that would put Trump in any serious danger of criminal conviction (at least for federal crimes)- they were so obviously slow walking this from the beginning anyway.
To be crystal clear - John Robert's SCOTUS has taken up the cause of the "America First" Inquisition.
Fly those freak flags high Slimy Sam & Martha-Ann.
Keep screaming about your supression & victimhood Uncle Clarence & Gin Em' Up Thomas.
etcetera adnauseum etcetera
This has been in the works for decades. Republicans got exactly what they wanted. Too many Democrats either didn’t vote or voted for someone other than Hilary because whatever. This could have all been avoided.
It’s also rich that Roberts wrote the opinion that exonerated Trump, the president whose impeachment trial he presided over.
Judicial ethics, I hardly knew thee.
Got to hand it to Roberts. He played the long game here and ended up making himself the most powerful person in the US.
And, to even make himself look like a “moderate” in comparison only makes it more insidious.
McReynolds at least had a fig leaf of a legal argument and precedent on his side, and he didn't think FDR could order him killed without fear of prosecution.
Hey Kev, I don't like them either but there were FUCKING SLAVES in this country as a point of pride not so long ago.
Things don't ALWAYS have to be *the most* to be important
I can't help but think that Roberts, Thomas, and Alito are auditioning for the $1.3B payout that Leonard Leo received. www.propublica.org/article/we-d...
The immunity ruling stinks. And thing is, we're not talking about immunity Trump for something like ordering the Soleimani assassination (which was clearly illegal). This is about stuff he did after being voted out of office. The docs, the Jan 6 stuff, etc., all AFTER he lost.
The scenario is repeated again and again, where the aim of the executive branch is to dismantle democracy. The first step is ever to subdue the judiciary
- Putin did it in 2000 in Russia
- Orban in 2012 in Hungary
- Kaczynski in 2015 in Poland
Trump did not invent the wheel
I am a prophet of doom.
Bring on the oligarchy. Wish I were kidding, but it seems to be where we're headed. If you have money, you win, and you can't be held liable for how you got there.
The thing is:Trump is preparing the US justice system to look like the Ruzzian one.SCOTUS has just helped him copypaste this from 4yrs ago and I BET, they had it in their plan for his win in 2020 or after Jan6.
That's why the charges of treason shld ACTUALLY Be EXTENDED to Justices
It’s absolutely bonkers that they ruled that there’s absolute or presumptive immunity, with no consideration of motive, for official acts. It’s entirely possible to corruptly perform official acts to, say, obstruct justice, and now the president is immune from any of those crimes.
Biden (and the whole Democratic party) needs to explicitly run against it. This decision is going to be even less popular than Dobbs, and for the first time, checking the Court's power is going to be an electoral winner.
The wildest thing to me is, how much of this ruling focuses on Trump. He's not president! Biden is now king and everyone seems to be under the impression this only applies to Trump.
Biden could use this to fix a lot of problems right now. Have zero faith, but nobody is talking about it.
Honest question from abroad:
If Fani Willis and her mom had to hide for years from MAGAts why aren't good people outside the Supreme Court?
If there's a Million Mom March for gun safety, where are the good people showing up for democracy?
The fascists are well funded, highly organized and active
I’ve seen so much said about Roberts’ apparent drive to maintain a respectable legacy- and like, nope, he clearly never cared at all about how he’ll be remembered
Ultimately it's Democrats' desire to maintain the perception of legitimacy on the part of the Court which will hamstring them. Actually going out there and calling the Court what it is - an unelected political actor of last resort - is destabilizing. No moreso than presidential impunity, I think.
