ICYMI: The face of a Neanderthal woman excavated from Shanidar Cave in Iraqi Kurdistan in 2018 has been reconstructed, and I kind of love it. Another Kennis Twins reconstruction, because they just cannot stop being the best in the game.

There’s a new documentary on Netflix about Neanderthals and specifically Shanidar cave. They even interview the Kennis brothers.

To save people like me a google search, or to start one: they lived between 130,000 and 40,000 years ago, and the name means Humans from the Neander Valley. The spelling Neandertal with no H reflects modern German, and is preferred by some but is not dominant.

I really appreciate art that makes it clear that these people were just people, not so very different from us.

Unpopular observation... Neadertal is just a branch of the homo sapien line.

Really drives home how much like us they were. If you saw Shanidar Z here on the subway or in Publix, you probably wouldn't look twice.

I just....I honestly see her and think of her as the kind "mother" of her entire tribe. The one you could go to and she would first come up and hug you tightly before you discussed with her the day's events and your troubles.

Not only that, but the archeological record is showing more and more of their social structure and networks. They were complex, peaceful people, with a deep culture. And perhaps most importantly of all, they weren't killed off. It's looking more like they were absorbed into the Homo sapiens line.

I love that they put in the effort to make them human and happy and smiling as opposed to a neutral expression. This also looks like the kindest woman you'd never want to cross. She gets shit done.

That's the region that had the biggest city later in the day. We need to teach about the Yamnaya, Botai, Mittani cultures in schools as our common ancestors. They were cute 😁

Is it weird that I think she's lovely & I'd like to make friends? Neanderthals had language & communities, so you could gradually acclimate to their society. They farmed & fished, so you'd eat well.

my brain: why does she have to be smiling? we shouldn't assume that smiling was a thing for neanderthals bc modern humans have all different customs and norms regarding facial expressions. my heart: she is grandma ❤️❤️❤️

As much as I love computer scanning & modelling and what it can do in terms of reconstructing someone from just a skull, I don't think we should ever loose the skill/art the Kennis Twins keep showing us.
