Yeah, I don't get people who claim it's not there. Maybe those people have only read modern Lovecraftian stories? Because Lovecraft tapped into some powerful images that found a place in cultural consciousness, and those images were used in stories that were explicitly racist.

My family is such a bunch of dorks (complimentary). It's a holiday weekend, so of course it's the right time for a visit to a museum exploring the history of the city's flour milling industry! (Truly, though, Mill City Museum in Minneapolis is a good museum and was enjoyed by all.)

Walkers repeated used to point out infirmity/old age becomes fewer people being willing to use walkers or being seen using one. Walkers are mobility/stability tools: we might think of that as a neutral or even as a positive thing, if not for the cruddy way walkers are maligned - like in that cover.

My cousin's son DID NOT like the driveway fireworks party my sister's neighbor had (and frankly neither did I), so the fireworks non-enjoyers went inside and played a game that involved suggesting funny captions for memes. Very civilized evening.

Instead of scaring your neighbors with fireworks this year, why not scare them the old fashioned way? Grow out your antlers and fangs, cultivate a thunderous beard of moss, haunt the night, and become a terrifying creature of legend and lore.

Part of me (as an American) wants to seek an explanation of why Rees-Mogg is wearing what looks like a ribbon you get for making the first place pie at the state fair and standing next to someone wearing...that...on his face. Part of me suspects it's better left a mystery.

Get a few levels on you and you're going to be terrifying. Or at least the witch I played in an old campaign was!

Might also be RNG if the same level. It's funny, I saw your class and thinking a monk and a bard is both a fun start to roleplaying and a decent core of a party. Just need like a witch or a druid or some other dedicated caster now.

I wish more people were pointing this out to voters in Montana. (Maybe there are some people doing it out there? Let me know.) Public lands access is one of the few things that has cross-party support with voters (rich politicians? welll...) We also have a significant % of Native American voters.

If you’ve never seen Dorothea Lange’s photographs of the World War II internment camps and the Japanese-Americans who were imprisoned there, today is a good day to see them and to commit to making sure this never happens again.

The idea that every action needs to be subject to an individual level cost benefit analysis is one of the worst applications of economics. We live in a society. That comes with some civic duties.

Happy 4th of July! In the wise words of Ben Franklin: The Bald Eagle is a Bird of bad moral Character. Too lazy to fish for himself. The Turkey is a more respectable Bird, though vain & silly, a Bird of Courage, and would attack a Brit who should presume to invade his Farm Yard with a red Coat on.

I don't blame them at all! They and their parents were expecting either screen time zone out or dark quiet sleep time. Instead they got a nonstop loop of other people on beaches and water slides (neither in great supply at the flight's destination, Minneapolis)

The flight had a tailwind and landed 20 minutes early, the only saving grace. But it was so annoying! I kept trying to zone out, and it kept flashing pictures of cruises and water slides! Also, the many children on the flight were unusually restless for a night flight, and no wonder.

I didn't think air travel could get worse, but I was just on one that ran the same three commercials on a loop on the seat back TV for the entire two hour flight, and holy shit there is something worse than the same old same old.

My dad never let us shoot fireworks because he knew a kid who got a bottle rocket to the face, and while I resented it at the time, I'm now very glad he made that rule and that mom wouldn't let us ride in anyone's pickup bed because she'd seen a horrible accident involving a pickup bed full of kids.

That's a great use of the postcard method. I'd genuinely welcome a postcard about school board races and suspect many others would too, since that's an area where people might not have much information.

When I was doing that, I also ended up meeting a couple canvassers who were AMAZING but always needed a partner - one couldn't drive and the other had very limited physical mobility. They did most of the talking while someone else did the driving or held the pamphlets.

It's also worth contacting local orgs and just asking. I did doorknocking for a couple weeks, liked it, but then got drafted to look over an office location because of my "computer skills" (basically just knowing how to use Excel - lots of regular volunteers were older and uncomfortable with it).

Contacting representatives - not just senators, but people closer to home too - doesn't require any in person contact. Officials really do track public sentiment, and the people with the most time to complain are often the privileged and selfish. It helps to provide balance.

Most cities have some way for residents to express their opinions outside of live council meetings too. Being able to write a good, thoughtful, specific letter is a skill many people don't have.
