I would love the Tories to choose Braverman as leader and then Badenoch, but only if they both crash and burn.

There are huge problems with the UK. Labour government doesn't have a magic wand. It was distasteful of the Tories to blame Labour when they had been in power for 14 years. Labour is perfectly entitled to blame the Tories but not for long, and Labour must start to deliver very soon.

There may be hope for France. A second poll/estimate shows the likelihood of a majority for Rassemblement National is getting less likely. Still, anything can happen. I have voted, of course. Fingers crossed for Sunday night.

Regrettably, the North (previously West) Yorkshire constituency where I live, Skipton and Ripon, stayed in Tory hands, but the majority was slashed. The Member of Parliament Julian Smith was made a Knight by the now ex Prime Minister.

Worth remembering, for the next five years, that the Tory party rules ASSUME they'll have a large number of sitting MPs. e.g. to automatically start a leadership context only 15% of tory MPs have to put in letters. 15% of 130ish seats is... not a lot.

But more to the point, will the new Labour government do something to sort it out?

Considering the Tories tried to steal the vote by accepting certain IDs for older people that are not eligible for students, maybe not that much. Maybe a huge voter apathy.

Close to 40% didn't vote.
About 20% voted Labour.
About 15% voted Tory.

Reform won 29% of the vote in Sunderland South. Much more than the Tories. Can you really see the Tories not standing a candidate in 2029 in such a seat? I can't. That's why I think a merger is a possibility.

What would be the result if the Tories and Reform merged? Would it be beneficial in term of votes for the (far) right or would it result in what happened to the Tories under Hague and IDS? My worry is that like in France, the RW electorate may have shifted largely to the far right.

One thing: it's impossible, today, to predict the next election. How much of Labour low percentage was caused because people thought they were freer to vote for other parties because the Tory vote was so low?

Funny isn't... Labour has a Blair style majority, and I am slightly disappointed as the Tories got 131 seats

Today is National Bin Day in the UK, when they finally put the rubbish out.

Remember, today isn't the standard bin or recyclables, it's toxic waste. 👍

Either the Democrats will run Biden, or he'll say he can't continue the campaign and Democrats will run Harris. Either is newsworthy, but neither is nearly as radical as running a pro-insurrection convicted felon with legal immunity he's eager to use.

After Brexit, the 2019 general election sent me into a deep depression. Starmer is not my cup of tea but the Tories deserve oblivion. I hope I can rejoice tomorrow night.

THE sentence of the day: A Macronist incumbent in the Marseille region came in 3rd in her seat. She just dropped out to support the left. She said, about why she's maneuvering to block the far-right: "Defeats happen, but you can never recover from dishonor."
