When I think about it, I guess that is exactly what red/blue shift is, but I had never made the connection to macro processes. Very cool.

Wait, so this means that we're watching events happen there in fast-forward a bit? Things appear to us to be happening faster than they are happening there because each subsequent bit of light takes slightly less time to get here than previous bits?

Last summer I read This Is How You Lose The Time War in a hammock while camping, and I've been chasing that high ever since. What books should I bring to the woods with me this month? Let's assume I already know about Bujold, Martine, Pratchett, Leckie, and Chambers.

We had this as well growing up. And orange mixing bowl that would go next to our beds when we had stomach bugs, and that we otherwise served salad out of at dinner. I never had any feelings about it, but my sister objected to using it for food when they got older.

We understand this correct? Project 2025 is not fringe on the right. It's just that everyone in the center and on the left doesn't pay attention to evangelicals cause y'all think they're funny and weird instead of wildly fucking dangerous. Project 2025 is dead serious and extremely popular.

Love to watch nazis get kicked in the butt. (fr though that party still has way too many seats (i.e. more than zero, but also, like, fully a quarter of the assembly??))

In France, the left coalition comes in first, Macron second, the far-right third. The best way to defeat fascism is not centrism, it’s a strong left.

This is great, as usual. Do you script them as well as narrating? I thought the slinky analogy was great.

I don't understand why they let it stay that bad. Infection risk aside, I feel bad for the drivers and other staff. They must have constant headaches.

Please excuse a non-nature post. This is happening now to bring awareness to Long Covid. I've been watching for half an hour and already learned a lot. Dianna Cowern is an incredible science Youtuber who's been in bed with Long Covid for almost two years. Hosted by Simone Giertz & others. 🧪

Can you help me understand this? Are seatbelts dystopian also? Condoms? What is it about wearing a mask on public transit and in healthcare settings that feels dystopian to you?

Everyone is angry about the world and scared about the future and defensive on account of being pretty sure (correctly or not) that someone else is blaming them for something terrible and I don’t know if any of that will help but it’s probably useful to acknowledge what’s happening and breathe a bit

lol when texans say this. The two farthest apart cities I can find in TX (McAllen and Texline) take 13 hours to drive between. In Ontario, it takes 23 hours to drive from Windsor to Kenora and you're still only about halfway up the province. If you want to go any farther north, you need a plane.

The right is not disaffected _because they have an actual, well-moneyed apparatus to seize power_. The online edgelords are irrelevant.

It's effective propaganda for people who want leftists to be disaffected and disengaged. It does not spur positive action.

The right wing larpers didn't bring about an organized movement, they provided cover for the one that already existed. The left doesn't have that.

5. A straight man didn't want to listen to her talk about this. Probably because he doesn't like the idea of women talking about sex and/or he is a prude. Not because she is completely unhinged.

3. What men like to do for sex is dress like women. It is Known (see 2 and also Freud) 4. (implied) therefore trans lesbians are dangerous sex perverts and not Real Lesbians (TM)

fr though, I hate that I can parse this, but this is what she is saying: 1. Lesbians with penises are pushing for access to female spaces 2. Straight/bi women are experts on what men like to do for sex, and talk to each other about it

At this point I wish covid was endemic. Because at least that way there would be policy about monitoring and reporting. Right now we're in this weird nowhere space where it's not defined as endemic, but we're not treating it like an emergency, so it's just.... silence.

And they need to commit to monitoring it and taking action to reduce spread when it crosses that threshold.

A disease is endemic if its burden of morbidity and mortality falls below a policy-defined acceptable threshold. So in order for a disease to become endemic, policy makers need to write down, where everyone can see, how much illness and death they are willing to allow from that disease.
