My 'favourite' from a few years back was a Guardian reviewer who wrote something like this... 'An enjoyable read but then the author messed it up by introducing a supernatural element. The story did not need that.' ... about a Stephen King novel.

A generalist reader may be of more use than one who really likes or dislikes the genre. It is one of my bugbears how often newspaper book reviewers obviously dislike a genre, complaining about the supernatural elements in John Connolly's fiction etc - but a real fan may not even notice the writing?

I just read the UK Conservatives are still trying to sell the 'Don't give Labour a supermajority' line. Which is a bit like saying 'Don't give your kids a Mary Poppins babysit.' Supermajorities aren't a thing in the UK; neither, praise the Lord, are supercalifragilisticexpialidociousing babysits.

People who buy these things should have embraced catwalk culture: what the models there are wearing is never meant to be worn as clothes. It is, or should, be the same for Musk-y car models.

I just made these. They are quite nice and very easy to make; which is quite remarkable, since it's an Ottolenghi recipe! 250gr all purpose flour 1 tsp baking powder 120gr hand-warm water 25gr olive oil 1/2 tsp salt 1 tsp paprika powder 1/4tsp cayenne pepper (Instructions in alt text)

I was once asked to be a helper on a writers' site. I agreed, with one condition: that I could ignore all those who didn't read (poetry) because they didn't want to be 'influenced'. What that meant was that their work was cliché-riddled, 'cause that was the only kind of language they got exposed to.

And another one; plus the second omnibus edition. I discovered the joys of novella writing fairly late, and the format really suits me. I can do one novella in a bit under a month, which is a long enough period to be interesting and short enough to keep it from becoming a slog. The Goldilocks zone.

That's mildly disconcerting. Normally, when I see two rows of much read paperbacks of a certain age, I'm pretty certain I will have read about a third of them and at least have heard of most of the others. I'm pretty sure I have read none of these and most titles don't ring any bells. Weird.

This is a recipe from the Bake With Jack 'Home Baker's Club'. If you like baking bread and you have some ready cash to spare, you can do much worse than become a member. There are a lot of recipes already on the site and more are added once per month.

'Wir haben es nicht gewußt' is even less believable this time round The photo caption translated: 'If pigs could commit suicide, there wouldn't be any exports.' (One of the arguments of the industry's defenders: that, financially, the exports are so important.)

True. They are also excellent frozen in thinnish slices, to nibble on when they are still frozen solid. Fully defrosted again they are very very meh.

I took the (then one huge) book with me on my first solo camping holiday. One night the rain got into the tent and the book ballooned up to twice its original size. I had to buy another copy back in Holland, three weeks later. Which was quite traumatic since I had been on two thirds of the book.

Very much worth reading. Also, a Bruce Springsteen line I didn't know:

"Walk on through the night because that’s where the morning is".

Amen.

Even if not all of us will make it to that morning, knowing it will be there anyway will do.

Me, earlier today, while checking my mail: Oh, my fingers are tingly. Why are they tingly? Could it be arthritis? Me, moments later: You cut a hedge yesterday; 2 hours of holding a pair of heavy, not very sharp shears gripped firmly in your hands at shoulder height. Arthritis, my arse. Idjit.

More bread experiments. I'd made these flatbreads 4 times, obeying its demands for a 6-12 hours fridge rest, straight after the 2nd fold inside the bowl. Now I let it rest for 30 minutes more after the 2nd, did one extra fold and fridged the dough 4 hours. That worked very well: excellent bread.

I studied English at uni, in Holland, so they were extra snobby, to compensate for their unfortunate Dutchity; and writers like Maugham & Graham Greene were frowned upon. I also read Homer in secondary school: all fiction is genre fiction. Lit fic is just a blip on the temporal story landscape.

All you ever need to know about the Oscars, in the Guardian: "He did not win a major award for any of his film roles (and was never nominated for a conventional Oscar)". It's often said, when someone dies, we won't see their likes again. In Donald Sutherland's case, that might just be plain fact.

Odysseus was like a heat-seeking missile aimed at Mount Doom, compared to Moses. I mean, forty years? To get from Egypt to Canaan? Moses had the homing instincts of a demented, drunk squirrel.
