the difference been pundits who have spent too much time huffing gasoline and journalists who are actually thinking through this with seriousness is whether they think having a contentious, brokered convention is less problematic than just going with biden's elected successor.
The entire topic reads like a fanfiction version of American government. "Let's pretend that the rules of succession don't exist. Now we can replace Joe Biden with Rockabs McHugeschlong!"
I'm not the biggest Harris fan but I mean the American people did hold a national vote on "who should step up if Biden stops being president for some reason" and Harris won so 🤷
If you're trying to place yourself in the latter category, I'm afraid it only serves to call out that both seem content to treat this as a no-stakes horse race, or to accept a single poll as evidence that this strategy will totes work.
We literally had to pass a law just to get Biden/Harris on the ballot in Ohio.
Do they think the Republicans are going to go along with that a second time?
My hot probably wrong take is that democratic infighting is good actually, the lack of primaries means democratic issues and leaders aren't featured in media and the public isn't thinking about them, a contentious convention might actually activate democratic voters instead of turning them away
At this point I doubt the vast majority of pundits think past how many clicks their next post will get. One thing they obviously do not care about is the stakes of the next election and how it will impact their viewers/ readers
“Democrats should invite representatives of prominent martial arts clans, including the Tanaka clan, to an illegal, underground martial arts tournament, or ‘Kumite,’ in Hong Kong with bouts over the course of several weeks to determine the nomination.”
Spurned access journalists posting shit like this to get back at a politician for freezing them out really gives off a real "NOTICE ME! DEBBIE WHY WONT YOU NOTICE ME!" energy.
“MILLIONS WOULD WATCH”.
And like… so?? Millions of people watch “arrests gone wrong” videos on YouTube every day. A spectacle is not a political positive.
