Also this is largely an effect of the structure of our voting systems, i.e. single-member districts with first-past-the-post elections. Duverger's Law is more of a Tendency but I believe it fits the US at this place + time.

You've probably heard this analogy before but old school organizers talk about the political parties like sports stadiums: the activity is a result of who shows up (to play, to watch, to hock trinkets, etc), and it changes (albeit slowly). Parties would be more consistent if there were more of them.

Perfect example of this phenomenon. Every reporter who regurgitates Trump's denial that he somehow doesn't know who the Heritage Foundation is will make them laugh and laugh and laugh at how gullible the DC elites are. bsky.app/profile/mtsw...

Reminder that the Heritage Foundation publicly published their plan to invade and establish permanent bases in the Middle East on any pretext, before 9/11.

On Earth 2, we're running a political science experiment where elite media outlets attempt to hound a convicted felon out of running for president while wildly speculating about an RNC open convention fantasy draft.

Lmao they just changed the title of the piece from “Why I don’t vote” to “Why I won’t vote” rather than tell readers that the guy actually does vote

I spent my last 4th in DC two years ago, sick with COVID (which delayed my move to GA). Columbia Heights was like a war zone for 12 straight hours. No escaping the smoke and noise. Not missing it this year.

Man, if it turns out that the right winger telling NY Times readers that they should follow his example and not vote did in fact vote in the last two elections, the Times should add this to the piece. Better than a retraction, since it illustrates a willful hypocrisy.

Yoda trained a generation of Jedi, including the individual largely responsible for restoring democracy to the galaxy. Jabba was a fat greedy moron who was strangled to death by someone using the actual chain he used to enslave her.

I get very dejected every time I'm reminded that a lot of politics is just fucking primary school, not because politics itself is a dumb game or because policy doesn't matter, but because so many of the humans participating in politics are emotionally still in fucking primary school.

Honestly still in shock that the most crooked American President in history said "I need immunity" and the GOP Supreme Court said "well, it's nowhere in the constitution, but sure, why not? Whats the worst that could happen?"

The Ford pardon of Nixon would have been totally unnecessary. A million other actions and arguments in American history assume presidents aren't immune. It's a totally new idea, nowhere in text or American tradition. Arguably the least originalist major SCOTUS decision in American history.

When all of the Proper (legal, political, and institutional) Remedies are off the table it does not take societies long to figure out what the only Remedy they have left is, and I wonder if the Court put any thought into that!

Isn't it interesting that they're trying to frame themselves as initiating *that* war instead of the Civil War? Wannabe Confederates still don't like being called what they are. Probably because it reminds them they lost the first time.

Sure, but the only true test as to whether it's an official act or not is to have a Republican president do it and see if SCOTUS upholds.

I believed this for a long time as well. Broad preference for liberal policies (in the abstract at least) has been well-established for a long time in polling but I've never seen it translate into anything meaningful electorally.

It was very traumatic for Republicans to have Nixon resign in disgrace & then 13 years later have Reagan close to being impeached (what saved him as much as anything was an implicit "he's too senile to have been knowingly involved" argument). Partisan hacks like Roberts have never forgotten this.
