the planet is on fire and people can’t afford air conditioning, surely this is the time to come up with a technology nobody asked for and nobody wants then dedicate all the electricity to maintaining it
Stop saying it is “AI” because it isn’t. I fully understand how an LLM works and I still say that calling it a glorified Markov chain is being very gracious.
is it just me or does it really feel like this is all just to keep shit away from the rest of us? like, this way they can just deny us power on top of everything else
the point is just playing keep away to keep us suppressed
The AI facility in Musk’s new Gigafactory in Texas will house 50,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs. Each one consumes about 3,740 kWh annually. So *just to power the GPUs,* Musk will need 187GWh per year. This is higher annual consumption than some entire countries.
See, after the tech bros have safely evacuated to their outer space pleasure palaces, the AI can Skynet the rest of us and use our biomass as fuel for carbon recapture.
A complaint about any particular use of electricity, or water, or gummi bears, is really a complaint about externalities not being correctly priced into commodities.
Let's fix the fact that fossil fuels don't pay for their externalities! The rest will balance out.
I’m a fan of ML technology in certain circumstances—biomedical mainly, given what my kid’s insulin pump does for him—but even I start thinking about sledgehammers when it comes to this shit.
My modest proposal: all people who have lost work to the AIs can make a living by generating electricity via stationary bikes or similar to power the AI.
Hey, you know what……let’s also have a bunch of computer algorithms add. Then reward those people with fake weird things and make up a silly name like mommas smelly dipshit coin. That should help cool the Earth down.
BC has a nearly fully renewable electricity grid. But electricity makes up less than 20% of the power we use. To get to net-zero, we have to build enough electricity generation to replace most of the rest of that 80%+. It will be tough AS IS without wasting massive amounts of energy on “AI”
