This this this! It’s the first thing I say when people ask how they can help the library. The second thing is show up, use our services. Come get your copies here instead of at Staples, we’re cheaper and the more you use us, the better are stats. The better our stats, the more our funding rises.

ah gotcha. I'm still waiting for confirmation from a non-terfy source. unfortunately won't be surprised if it's forthcoming tho--soo much toxicity in those circles in the 80s and 90s (and today but little pushback then) disappointing : (

Had the walls been an open grid, like in industrial buildings, it would not have been claustrophobic, but the white metal walls sliding downward and the sight of the ceiling approaching ever closer would make an unbelievable horror movie set piece.

Google’s emissions are up 48% in 5 years. Microsoft’s are up 30% since 2020. Those soaring figures are being driven by mass investments in data centers to power AI tools. Generative AI is a climate disaster and data center expansion must be stopped.

Was at a reception with such fancy catering last evening that the staff had been trained in European wine-glass etiquette and handed off filled glasses by the flat of the base only. By some miracle I did NOT exclaim: "I've only ever seen that in Renaissance paintings!" thou it'd've been funnier.

There's another key attribute of hope that doesn't get mentioned much.

Hope fights.

Even when victory seems unlikely—especially then—hope fights.

We should be hopeful people.

The last week felt much like the other two events that most advanced American fascism—that being the 9/11 terrorist attacks and the Trump election. There's a pervasive and inescapable feeling of dread and despair around, because, as fascists see it, there is supposed to be.

In that exact part of the aviary I heard a young father (probably in his late 20s/early 30s) say to his child, "What do you get when you give a baby owl a bath? A moist owlette." To which I busted up laughing as my boyfriend at the time just glared at me.

And this spectacular critter, which is definitely a Fritillary and tentatively ID’d as a Silver Washed Fritillary. Apparently the Finnish name translates as “Emperor’s Cloak.”

Whenever I hear arguments why university libraries should cancel "the too many" journal subscriptions, I have to think of #Futurama S1E11:

"Over here is Wong Library. It has the largest collection of literature in the Western universe."

Instead of "Reading Room Rules" I love how Smith College's Special Collections uses "Community Agreements" which establishes a partnership from the start rather than a "Don't you dare." I really recommend reading through this! docs.google.com/document/d/1...

Currently floored to discover 21st-century critics of modernist lit extolling as an amazing innovation the same method I can point to being used in the 1920s, 1850s, and even the 1690s. Not saying they're all directly related, or that they're all identical. But new in 1950? Yeah NOPE.

Alrighty, already begun a week thick with debates about my insecure future, and taking today to write to try to build myself up enough to endure it. So I'll be online today, is what I'm saying, so I'm gonna ask you, Bluesky, to lower the temp a bit, increase the petpix, etc, yeah? Be the helpers?

Today's must-read. Everything has a history, including yesterday's judicial coup on behalf of the executive, now possessing legal immunities that would be the envy of an absolute monarch.
