Happy #primeweek! I just want to let y’all know that the Amazon shipping warehouse where my husband works is denying workers fans during a nationally recognized heat emergency and everything you order during time week places workers’ lives at risk.

It's my cat's birthday, so her vet sent me this reminder of the first appointment she had with them as a kitten. I wasn't allowed in because of covid, but when they brought her out, the vet tech said she "made lots of friends in there." This was clearly a lie. Anyway, happy birthday to Mookie!

In case you needed some good news today -- which, yeah, we all did -- the plaintiffs in Sines v. Kessler won their appeal against the white supremacists. Gift link!

Thinking about this again in light of, you know, the news. I went back and looked at the emails I sent and received as a PhD student in election week of 2020. People were stressed as hell. A bunch of meetings and classes cancelled. And that was not the year we elected a fascist.

There's so much in this story, but one of the tragedies for me is how bad so many white Americans in particular are at recognizing ideas of sacredness that aren't rooted in Christianity.

When we had to move a conference from Texas, we got some very angry comments from a section of membership. I didn't know how to make people, especially people who cannot get pregnant, understand the new reality.

Hey #AcademicSky! Has anyone ever tried to co-create rubrics with their students? How did it go? How much class time does it take? What surprised you about it?

Picture of Mookie looking deeply alarmed for attention.

This is why mask bans are suddenly being proposed. If you’re in a place where that’s happening and you think we should prioritize public and personal health and freedom over expanding the powers of the police state then please do let your representatives know why the freedom to mask matters to you

The very first negative student feedback I ever got as a TA/instructor -- and my absolute favorite, to this day -- was a student who objected to my use of the phrase "eat the rich" in a lecture on the social determinants of health in an undergrad intro to epidemiology course.

One of the reasons I keep masking is that fighting ableism is part of how we fight fascism and white supremacy. If you really believe in mutual aid and the idea that we keep us safe, mask up. It's political and it's public health.

There are two kinds of people in the world: the people who think a mask ban at protests will only be used against people at a protest, and the people who know the LAPD will suddenly start calling two Black people hanging out outside “a protest.”

Even before mask bans become law, simply the act of politicians speaking about mask wearers as criminals is stigmatizing a critical public health tool, and encouraging harassment of marginalized groups. That is incredibly reckless and making our cities more unsafe.

One of the only things I miss about the other place is the Dodgers fans who would reliably post Chris Taylor photos and gifs any time he had a hit or whatever. Anyway, he had a great inning, he’s perfect, never done anything wrong in his life, etc. etc.

There's also no masking requirement, nothing about testing.... And it's going to be hot, so of course people will stay inside the whole time. So if you're covid-cautious for any reason, you're also simply not being welcomed. I don't get it.

This is a genuine question. I'm confused and sad. How could you look at your students, peers, or dept. staff who said "I can't go to Texas, it's not safe for me," and just shrug that off? Is the social experience or career benefit really worth leaving people behind?

#SER2024 starts today in Austin, TX. It's my field's biggest conference, I've gone since I was a PhD student. This year, it's being held in a state that's hostile to trans people, anyone with a uterus, people of color.... How can we justify going somewhere as a field where some of us are not safe?

Use generative "AI" to spitball, hypothesize, overcome the tyranny of the blank page? I mean if the environmental costs weren't astronomical & the training corpra weren't largely stolen, then yeah, sure. Use it for facts? Knowledge? To fully *Replace* thought, feeling, & creativity? Absolutely not.

Look at me. Listen to me: If someone is selling you a "search" & "knowledge" "AI" product they claim is smarter & better & faster than you, but it literally cannot be guaranteed to give you simple true facts about consensus reality when asked, then that product DOES NOT WORK and SHOULD NOT BE USED.

One of the horrifying things about this is how bad faith actors will continue to politicize public health, marginalizing p.h. professionals and endangering us all. But we haven't yet convinced the field of public health to respond by taking on a more openly political pro-health anti-fascist role.

There's already a process of remembering our dead differently as time passes -- in my experience, anyway. I don't know if I'd want something like this to interfere with my grief, especially since I've found the revisionist history beautiful and comforting. I dunno, interested in what others think!

This was such an... uncomfortable? listen for me. Both of my parents were dead by the time I was 35, and part of my grieving was realizing that our relationships would never have a chance to change (by which I mean improve, if I'm honest). Wouldn't this tempt you to keep trying something like that?
