Biden didn’t get up and perform athletic feats but it seems like a pretty normal interview from an old guy? This is the single greatest moment of political derangement I have ever witnessed in this country. The president gives a normal interview and everyone says… he must join Nixon and resign?
Relatedly- the thing with "I think Biden should drop out now and running him would be a huge mistake but if he gets the nomination I'll support him unconditionally" is that I don't fucking believe you. Not for one moment.
there's the larger question about why "a couple anonymous donors speaking on background says something bad about the candidate" is considered to be newsworthy enough to peg a front-page, push-notification-generating story to. Could easily do the same to Trump!
i missed the biden interview but don't see a lot of chatter about in on here, which makes me think there wasn't a ton of fodder for the "drop out" crew
if I had spent the last week being repeatedly wrong about what’s going to happen in the polls after the debate I might have developed a little humility about what’s going to happen after this interview
Step one is that progressives stop overtly trying to destroy him?? What is wrong with you, you’re setting him on fire and saying “tell me how we extinguish him”

The attempt to get radical leftists to engage with politics as it is lived is actually mostly a struggle to get them to not prefer a glorious suicide over a frustrated life
Guess what I'm saying is that it's probably not a good time for the pontificating aloud bit either. Nobody individually is pivotal in this narrative, but we're all ultimately responsible.
I'm personally going to be posting like the politics editor for Pravda until election day.
Right, if you can't say with your whole chest "Biden is the Democratic Party's nominee for 2024 and until such a time that he steps aside I will support him whole-heartedly", you don't have the strength to actually fight fascism. If you are shitting bricks over 0.3% in the polls you're cooked.
And to me, that means backing whoever the candidate is. If he steps aside for Harris I may grumble in one or two posts about it maybe not being the best decision, but I will also immediately become the most ardent Kamala stan you've ever met
I know you have good intentions, but like... sometimes intentions don't matter that much. The only person who's going to get to decide this is Biden, and the only ones who will have much influence on that decision are elites. I think our job is to just be foot soldiers against fascism
Because a hot mic moment makes it sound like he didn't want other people to hear it, which makes it all the more reportable
Surely we have learned from the Trump years that when you do something scandalous out in the open, it doesn't count. It has to look like you were covering it up
It's by doing dumb shit that they have to report on because they have no choice because it's dumb shit.
Now the fact that he doesn't do that is not really a Biden problem, it's a Democrat problem. Democrats are allergic to media manipulation.
I mean this in the kindest way possible: this is an absolutely delusional view of how media works.
Yes, I do think Biden could flip the script. No, it would never be by stepping back and letting Harris take over the campaign. Nor is it by proving himself in campaign rallies or interviews.
I.e., doing or saying something so out of the norm that the media has no choice but to cover it. Like "accidentally" calling Trump a rapist or pedophile during a hot mic moment.
I actually do think that it's possible to get the coverage to change to some extent, but it wouldn't be about getting Biden to step back, it would be about taking some pages out of the Republican playbook when it comes to media manipulation
Okay, you really and earnestly believe that this would shift the coverage to Trump? Not Democratic dysfunction? Not questions about whether or not Harris was covering up the (now surely proven, given that he gave up) health problems?
It's easy to say "they should be able to get the NYT to cover something different", and it's a view I'm sympathetic to in a lot of ways, but it's also true that the media has its own perverse incentives here. It's not totally obvious that campaigns can force coverage.
We’ve all watched the GOP drag rapists, criminals, florid wackos, and brain-dead white supremacists to electoral victory over and over again.
Perhaps the Democrats can summon up some of that energy to save our democracy and our lives.
I mean, Trump is an insane felon rapist and a lot of people still voted for him. There’s no rule that says we have to honorably give a shit about if our candidate comes off as slightly addled, especially when we’ve got a perfectly good VP who can take over as soon as he makes it past the post.
The discourse around biden needing more sleep is fully insane. Does no one remember "Executive Time," the thing Trump spent the majority(!) of his schedule on where he would just watch TV and tweet? Dude was categorically unable to fulfill any of the demands of the office and the press barely cared
barring Biden changing his mind this seems to me to end it.
there is not a viable mechanism for getting Biden out if he doesn't want to go and he thinks he's functional.
I dunno, I think if Thomas fucking Friedman tells you to do something, then that's a pretty clear hint that the opposite course of action is the one to take.
