this is my boring reminder to BUY AN AIR PURIFIER and stock up on masks and filters before wildfire season, as this is now an annual thing and bad AQI is no joke

An inexpensive but proven hack is a box fan + furnace filter, preferably hepa, (merv13?). It’s great for big rooms, you want more for larger apartments or homes. I also have an air purifier, sits on my nightstand, it’s quieter than a box fan hack, but not big enough to filter my whole house.

I'm still working on rigging up some kind of furnace filters in window with fan pulling air in situation so that I don't have to choose between smoke and CO2 like I did last summer. Minimal luck so far.

Anyone in this thread have a recommendation for a smaller air purifier I can carry between the office and the craft room depending on what I’m doing that day? (We do have ongoing larger ones, but it’d be nice to have one for the office.)

Air purifiers are $$$, but you can DIY it with furnace filters and a box fan. Optimally you would make a cube (fan on top, blowing up, 4× filters for wall, cardboard on the bottom) for maximum efficiency, but even just slapping one on the back of a fan is huge. deohs.washington.edu/edge/blog/ho...

If you can’t find a good air scrubber, industrial kitchen supply stores often have them. That’s where I got mine.

Air purifiers can help with migraines too! I went from 2 a week to 3 in 5 years when we put an a.p. in our bedroom. It's worth every penny.

Bad AQI has been a part of life in the Sierra forever. If there is no wildfire, our local, state, and/or federal agencies will start one. Because Fire Prevention. And Californians head right into that bad air every time. Because Fresh Air Mountain Recreation. LOL from Yosemite.

For people who have the money to be choosy (though they do have a short budget-friendly list; I just always feel steered towards $$ models) this site is very thorough, and transparent about their methodology. housefresh.com/air-purifiers/

Building a Corsi-Rosenthal box (or two or five) is not really hard (can be a group project). Main drawback is noise, but you may prefer that to pollution. Quite cheap. Or kits with quiet PC fans - bit pricier, bit more trouble to assemble, still cheaper than commercial purifiers, I think

The flame deaths of all the N. Am. forests to climate change has had ash/smoke landing constantly from May-October in Wisconsin. The AQ is horrible. I've had unrelenting terrible allergies. The pandemic taught me masks really help, so I never leave home w/o 2 now. 1 K95 + 1 w/filter for "fashion!"

We have the parts for a new Corsi-Rosenthal filter box setup ready to go to be strapped to our window. It worked really well last summer!

I have been advocating for air purifiers for five years, pre-Covid-19, but many friends were like, "thanks for being annoying, it really helped with smoke/allergies/etc". If you are on a budget I recommend searching on FB Marketplace.

Note to anyone using one for the first time: the advice during wildfires was to position them close to the floor in front of any spaces - windows, doors - where air enters your dwelling.

We've got a few of the Corsi-Rosenthal type setups in the house; made with PC cooling fans though. Designed a frame that can be 3d printed and clipped together. Kinda fun!
