Shelley Duvall in the 1980s was like "Hey, Showtime, I want to a host a series where I cast myself and my celebrity friends in productions of all the classic fairy tales," and Showtime was like, "Okay, here's our money."

RIP to a legend.

Yeah, I'm 50 and my best friend in the 80s had a peanut allergy AND a Ritalin prescription. Multiple classmates have subsequently been diagnosed with autism. On the rare occasion when these takes are earnest, at best they're confusing memoir with history.

Well, well, well. WELL. That whole “protests made cops feel bad so they all quit” narrative? Looks like it was mostly myth. Excited to read this paper by Ben Grunwald, who compiled a huge dataset on post-2020 police employment. Agg decline was 1%… and bigger local declines not tied to protests.

Through my childhood, on election nights, my dad was the man under Peter Snow’s desk putting interesting facts on notecards into his socks. That’s how it was done before Google, kids. You got a very clever ASD man with some Oxford degrees to just remember interesting constituency histories.

Everyone is always afraid to say why people like Trump or Marie Le Pen have some level of popularity and it’s just that there’s a lot of people in the world who believe in racism. You end up with these goofy ass explanations for Trump where it’s NAFTA or shit and it’s like no you know what it is

Serial killer on TV: - extremely smart - also, cunning like an animal - charismatic but cold ‐ troubled childhood - operatic sensibilities - can only be caught by the greatest detective Serial killer IRL: - just a cop - a regular cop - cops won't stop him because he is a cop

Yeah, I can see that. I've worked in ed pub, and when the book is for FL public schools, let's say—there's problems I can't fix by moving commas around. Outside of ed, in one case I didn't know who the author was until contracts were signed. (It worked out fine, but what if they were awful?)

In 1994 the Pet Shop Boys were invited to perform 'Go West' at the Brit Awards.

They agreed and brought with them 3 separate choirs of miners. Some of those miners had marched with the gay and lesbian members of LGSM in the 1980s. It is one of the great, near-lost music moments

When my wife was recruited away from freelancing and we found ourselves with an FSA, I was reading up on all the "how to spend your excess FSA funds!" articles. Then I twisted my ankle and it took the whole thing to pay for scans and PT. (And didn't cover the PT-recommended shoes etc.)

This is very relatable. I was definitely the "no, I get why the death penalty makes sense in a vacuum, but in practice here's the problem" guy, and now I just think empowering an irreparably flawed justice system to kill people is unambiguously wrong.

I think the biggest one is probably police abolition. After seeing weakass or disingenuous discussion of police reforms, I reread some of the abolitionist work that had seemed "impractical" or "too far" when I was young and dumb. Before that it was religion; too much to fit here.

This is what I mean when I say liberals are sacrificing values for order. The vision of free speech portrayed by the NYT ed board is built around the academy as an arbiter of what does and does not earn a platform. What they dismiss as "shunning and shaming" is in fact democratic.
