Can’t believe you can just give people housing instead of making them live in a tent and then outlawing tents.

We, in so-called "liberal" VT, are right in the middle of this sh*t. At this very moment people deemed (with no actual assessment having happened, and, of course, using the assumption that mental health is somehow in no way connected with whether one is an "able-bodied"person) being thrown out......

Lmao Portland tried to give people housing vouchers but turns out landlords aren't thrilled with them!!! Also Portland was really bad at giving them out!! So of course instead of incentivizing landlords some other way and making the process of getting the vouchers easier they're banning tent cities

Meanwhile in Vienna, also an ancient city: lots of empty old houses because the rents are too high, so are the buying prices. Nobody can afford that. It's extremely sad.

But the NIMBYs tell me that poor people bring crime! And they don’t spend enough $ at local stores to make up for the parking spots lost to affordable housing! Because cars coming from the suburbs to purchase specialty face scrub are more important than homes for humans 🙄

“The Îlot Saint-Germain public housing complex includes a below-ground gymnasium and a day care center. The complex was built in the former offices of the French Defense Ministry.” The gov’t wants their citizens healthy, by providing a gym, and have a day care for the tenants’ children?!?! 🤯

Here in Minneapolis they're trying to find a way to repurpose empty office space into low-income housing but it's not going too well. Turns out office space wasn't built for long-term human habitation.

When I'm by the Bay, it is still charming, but in the way a decaying museum is charming. Stagnating and succumbing to entropy. Meanwhile Solano County, where so many millennials are moving, feels so vibrant and alive.

What stuck with me was this: “…the city counselor who oversees Paris’s commercial landholdings, refuses to rent city-owned retail space to chain restaurants. Instead, he is promoting bistros like Le Mesturet, owned by Alain Fontaine, left, who called traditional bistros “a social necessity.”

FWIW, the article's not about homelessness - of which, as of my visit there 5 years ago, Paris still had plenty, including a mid-sized Tent City near the Gare d'Austerlitz.

There's hundreds of people homeless living in tents,

Each year there are multiple cases of people living like rats in undeclared attics or other apartments

Oh and this GROSSLY misrepresents the reality of the situation.

But I'm not surprised, it's the NYT

There are about 330 000 homeless people in France, 900 000 without a personal home overall ; and 3 000 000 vacant homes. 3 000 000 empty homes we let owners keep empty while 330 000 people don't have a roof over their head. And we also outlaw tents in France.

Paris itself isn't that big and there always been a wave of pushing people outside of Paris proper. So thos numbers feel weird to me living there and seeing on a daily basis people evicted and pushed farther to "clean" the city for the olympics. It is a very segregated area, i can go in more details

LOL Paris is one of the most expensive city in the world, people who have jobs can't live in there cause it's too expensive, some of them are homeless while working and people are leaving the city because of the prices, most of the buildings are either empty or Airbnb...
