In further proof that this stupid RTO policy was not well thought out, our dept has just announced that we don't have space for people to work in office 3 days per week. I swear, this is keystone cops level of competence. They didn't ask if it was possible.

If ONLY the NYT used its influence to push for climate change mitigation with the same zeal they push Biden is old. Could you imagine?

Considering the shaky state of democracy in the US, I am endlessly surprised that there is so little demand for electoral reform.

Sure would be cool if media simply asked universities: “Are you invested in weapons manufacturing and businesses operating in illegal settlements?” And then reported the answer. Unfortunately, that seems too much to ask

We had so much interest in this week’s open office hours discussion on downtown revitalization, that we had to switch venues! Join us on the Red Apron patio on Friday from 11-1. I have it on good authority that they are serving lobster rolls for lunch, plus many vegetarian options.

Donald Trump is leading President Biden by six percentage points among likely voters and nine points among registered voters, a New York Times/Siena College poll found. The findings show that the debate took yet another toll on the public’s already diminished view of Biden, Nate Cohn writes.

There was an even bigger difference in the comments received. All on Threads and all but one here were positive, constructive, or neutral (one person was just being a jerk, not a troll). Only 18% on X were positive or neutral. The rest were negative, many highly so.

In 2016, Hillary Clinton gave a speech in Wisconsin about the importance of the Supreme Court.

She warned that 2016 was "make or break" for the court—and the country.

National media—focused on her emails and Trump's antics—barely covered the speech.

Doubling down on making office workers commute for NO EFFING REASON is bad climate policy. As far as I can see, it only makes sense because the general public doesn't like public servants so making us miserable is an election winning strategy.

This is an awesome newsletter. Thanks! I'm a public servant in Ottawa and I do not know a single person who is happy about the govt forcing us back into the office. Seems like parties think making PS miserable is a winning strategy for upcoming election. 😠

And I don't want to keep beating this drum, but encouraging more work-from-home instead of forcing public servants to commute unnecessarily is a simple, popular step towards reducing emissions.

We are also well positioned to make huge changes. Build better transit in urban areas, build good interurban rail, build wind and solar farms - if we had the political will, we could be leading the pack in climate mitigation.

“But our population is so small, we’re not contributing much anyways. Go talk to China!” they then say. Again, NO. We Canadians have some of the highest per capita emissions in the world, and our national cumulative emissions add up to 2% of the total. That’s enough to make us #9 globally.

People have to stop voting for the party that advocates for destroying our healthcare system if they expect to access care when they need it. Rural voters keep acting shocked when they vote for the party that closes hospitals.

I didn't say what I wanted to say because it was a work event, but holy hell. Does this person think that my house stops using energy when I am not home? Do they think that I consume more energy WFH than in an office? Do I emit more emissions walking down the stairs than commuting? GRRRR

And some nitwit said that it wasn't clear that WFH reduced emissions since, you know, you use heat and water while you're working from home. ....

I know, but it's foolish. Profits on SUVs aren't like a law of nature - they are a policy choice. Would be awesome if govts charged more for things that are bad for the environment and gave rebates for things that combat climate change.

There’s a group of kids on the corner selling lemonade. They yell “LEMONADE” at every passing vehicle, but the only people I have seen stop for a drink so far are on foot or bike. There is no shortage of free parking on the street. Maybe this is analogous to local business districts. 😉

If you widen that highway you won’t reduce emissions or congestion. What you WILL do is spend a lot of public money to induce even more cars emitting even more GHGs & pollution in the same or worse congestion with people still telling you to widen the highway. Period.
