On Twitter Sam Freedman points outā¦ There are more people in the Commons who were in Gordon Brown's last cabinet (2010) than were in Boris Johnson's cabinet when he resigned (2022). Five vs three.

I was assured - repeatedly - that centrists and liberals would *always* side with the fascists over the leftists, not ally with the leftists against the fascists. How strange. Itās *almost* as though Twitter communists are full of shit.

Also: Reform-Tory combos will not appeal in Surrey. They will be much more of a problem in the red wall - not in the leafy liberal suburbs where the LDs hunt. For every seat that the Conservatives can gain by swinging right, they will lose another to the LibDems

Some initial thoughts on the UK elections. 1. It confirms once again that when a center-right party veers to the hard right to weaken the far right, it ends up doing the opposite. After purging moderates and going full-on wingnuts and fever swamp, the Tories got decimated by Reform, not Labour. š§µ

They never learn - primarily because they are not a liberal party (with a liberal concern around democratic control of power), but a social democratic one (concerned with the exercise of power for Good Works).

Your point about the fragility of Starmerās majority is well made. And makes Labourās perennial refusal to reform the voting system even more frustrating.

Worth remembering, for the next five years, that the Tory party rules ASSUME they'll have a large number of sitting MPs. e.g. to automatically start a leadership context only 15% of tory MPs have to put in letters. 15% of 130ish seats is... not a lot.

I (54) was on a Strategic Advisory Board call for a financial sector firm this morning. Everyone on the call was a current or retired *senior* banking or IM executive. Natural Conservative territory? Everyone was *rejoicing* at potential Tory extinction.

A Conservative (who is, you are not gonna be shocked, not standing again) put it well in the other direction to me lately: 'I didn't agree with Gordon Brown, I didn't like his policies or his hopes for the country. But he had them and he tried his best to implement them, unlike us now.'

I donāt like first past the post and in general prefer minority governments or coalitions. But I think it would be very bad for everyone if Sunakās Conservative party didnāt get a notably worse result than Majorās, because the cynical and lazy approach of the last two years would appear validated.

This take is baffling. People were loudly saying this in 2016, large chunks of lefty dissenters maintained it was just a scare tactic, and then the lesser evil lost and the greater evil won and this is the direct result of that. The squishy liberal mind was proven emphatically correct

Donald Trump is the counter example - the trouble is that FPTP *does* prevent new parties entering from the left or right - but by the same token, if an extremist can gain control of an existing party, it can give them untrammelled power. If Farage does a reverse takeover of the Toriesā¦

So many people see this and get a moment of amusement and surprise but never think more about it: This is all of ancient history and archaeology: All of the fatty nooks and crannies lost to the decay of time until we take what remains and reimagine it as a leaner, purpose-built, brutal existence.

Johnson is a moderately talented columnist and bloody terrible novelist who became prime minister by mistake. Sunak is an assistant regional manager who was made CEO by computer error and thought he'd earned it.
